Based on his doctoral dissertation (Australian National U., 1993), You Ji (political science, U. of New South Wales, Sydney) targets the "quiet revolution from below" of Chinese industrial reform since the late 1970s. This case study of change is viewed through a lens on the danwei system of work units in state-owned factories, which exercise a "dictatorship over needs" via ideological and organizational control. His analysis encompasses: depoliticization (i.e. diminishing party controls), and de-statisation (through wage structure reform, and a new economic model divorcing state ownership from business management).
