The importation of American legal drama series by European television stations has caused confusion in the minds of many foreign viewers, including the French who have few quality legal fictions to informally teach citizens about their own legal system. Originally published in French as Series tele: visions de la justice (Presses Universitaires de France, 2005), Villez's (Anglo-American case law, University Paris 8) text examines the role that television dramas have played in offering American citizens useful information about their legal system. The text also addresses a specifically-French fear of cultural assimilation, particularly, the Americanization of French youth through exposure to American pop cultural forms. The English edition includes a new afterword describing developments from 2005 to 2009.
