Alam (law, Macquarie U., Australia) examines the nexus between the regulation of world trade and the protection of the global environment. He includes case studies of landmark decisions of the dispute settlement bodies of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade/World Trade Organization framework in order to explore which issues of sustainable development, regional equity, and common but differentiate responsibilities have been treated as legitimate policy goals in relation to trade and the environment and which are exposed as unenforceable rhetoric. He also discusses the increased prevalence of trade-related environmental measures such as eco-labeling and the imposition of product standards, arguing that these measures support Northern agendas and inflict damage on Southern developing nations. The emergence of regional trade blocs and the harmonization of environmental standards are also discussed in terms of the unfair requirements they place on the Southern countries that are punished even when they lack the capacity to implement agreements. Finally, analysis of Multilateral Environmental Agreements is included and similar conclusions are drawn. Annotation c2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
