In his history of the development of the American school curriculum, Kliebard (educational policy studies, U. of Wisconsin at Madison) argues that it was primarily shaped by the struggles between the humanists, the "guardians of an ancient tradition tied to reason," and three groups of reformers: the child study movement, the social efficiency educators, and the social meliorists. For this new edition, Kliebard retains the explicitly theoretical afterword added to the last edition and adds two new chapters that examine the impact of these battles on particular subjects of study. Herbert M. Kliebard is Professor Emeritus of Educational Policy Studies and Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He is the author of Schooled to Work: Vocationalism and the American Curriculum, 1876-1946.
