Roy McMakin ─ When Is a Chair Not a Chair?

Full-page images in an oversize format (10x13") represent 25 years of McMakin's work creating sculptures, furniture, architecture, paintings, drawings, and photographs. Represented by Matthew Marks Gallery in New York, Seattle-based artist McMakin (b.1956) has had solo exhibitions in the major museums of Los Angeles, Seattle, and Portland; he's created permanent outdoor sculptures in Seattle and San Francisco, and a series of limited edition furniture, among other projects. The five essays accompanying the images include one by the artist himself; the others are by conceptual artist John Baldessari, Michael Darling (curator of modern art, Seattle Art Museum), Lisa Eisner (photographer, and founder of Graybull Press), and Michael Ned Holte (a Los Angeles-based writer).
