Despite the fact that by the early twentieth century women missionaries began to outnumber male missionaries there is a dearth of publications dealing with their experiences, history and their contributions to the missionary movement. Rosemary Seton's book covers the period from the early nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century and examines the role of women missionaries in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, China, the Pacific, the Caribbean and in Madagascar. These fascinating yet untold stories are brought vividly to life using a variety of published and private sources, 'first-hand' impressions and accounts with quotations from diaries, letters and memoirs.
