Holmas (New Testament, MR Norwegian School of Theology, Oslo) argues that Luke-Acts offers a profile of prayer that, though complex and flexible, is explicable and substantially coherent if it is thought of not in terms of some static idea to be extracted from the text, but as an integral thematic component of the narrative fabric, understood as a developing continuum. Prayer should also be seen as conducive to Luke's strategy of persuading and moving his readers through a well-plotted narrative typical of ancient history writing. Among the topics are Lukan prayer within the context of the historiographical aims of the double work, the Lukan portrait of the praying Jesus, and prayer in the life and mission of the early community. The study is substantially revised from his doctoral dissertation at MF Norwegian School of Theology. T&T Clark is an imprint of Continuum.
