There are many examples of disability in the Hebrew Bible from generic admonishments regarding the lame and the blind in the legal texts to the afflictions of job. Raphael, a biblical scholar teaching in Central Texas, examines these images of disability in terms of how the disabled are viewed and in what way the disability might be used as a metaphor. For each section she also provides a "narrative prosthesis" or way in which the symbol of disability has been used as a "crutch" or shorthand way to introduce alterity into a narrative. In the Bible, disability is often not only used as a punishment by God but also, as in Job, as an indicator of the absolute power of God. In other cases, the image of deafness is defined as one who refuses to receive the word of God. Raphael's study demonstrates the subtle ways in which biblical passages can affect modern perceptions.
