Webster presents the ninth volume in a series that collects the works of linguistics scholar M.A.K. Halliday, in which Halliday considers language and education. In the 19 papers, which were originally published between 1960 and 1996, he examines mother tongue education, the relevance of linguistics in the teaching of English, second language learning, socialization, problems of language education and planning in multilingual societies, context, functional variation, and the place of linguistics in education. The volume includes a previously unpublished paper, "Applied Linguistics as an Evolving Theme" from a speech given in 2002, as the introduction.
