Small Scale Optics

Electronic spin has been widely investigated and used in many areas of research including semiconductor devices, electronics in metals, and magneto-electronic properties of materials. However, it is not as useful at longer distances, a limitation not seen in optical spin. As a result, optical spin has become a promising technique in developing new technologies and applications in semiconductors, magnetic tunnel junctions, nanoantenna, thin-film nanomagnets and cell communication. This book reviews the use of optical and electronic spins within various micro/nano devices and circuits. No other book treats devices and applications using optical spin in such detail.

Jalil Ali is a professor of photonics and head of the nanophotonics research group at the Institute of Advanced Photonics Science, ESci Nano Research Alliance and the Physics Department of UTM. He has authored/coauthored more than 200 technical papers published in international journal, three books and a number of book chapters. His areas of interests are in FBGs, optical solitons, fiber couplers, and nanowaveguides.

Preecha P. Yupapin is a lecturer with the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Bangkok. He has authored/co-authored of more than 351 published papers in SCOPUS database and 30 chapters and books. His research interests are in nanophysics, nano-electronics, spintronics, nano-communication and networks, molecular electronics, nano-medicine and beauty, and nano-energy.
