As Maoism recedes, Beijing has increasingly turned to patriotic nationalism for its ideological inspiration and legitimation. Chang (political science, U. of Nevada) discusses theories of nationalism, the formation and development of the Chinese people from their earliest days, and contemporary China's flavor of patriotic nationalism as it's represented in the writings of intellectuals, young people, and the military. She finds a mix of narcissism and insecurity, wounded pride and resentment, and a Darwinian world view and a resolve to retrieve lost territories to restore the nation to its former glory. She ends by examining the implications for US policy. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
