This book provides a comprehensive overview of the development of thinking about security in Brazil. Lima develops a new framework for considering intellectual history in Brazil and applies it to the development of knowledge on security. This theoretical framework is then used to argue that one specific discourse of Brazilian identity has been the main source of knowledge production in the country since the 1930s. In doing this, the book puts forward a critically engaging framework for analyzing the role of intellectuals in Brazil and reassesses the exclusionary ideas embedded in the politics of identity and security.
Three different historic contexts are used as case studies and test the central theoretical framework, uncovering continuities and similarities between these three different periods of Brazilian history. The overarching argument that emerges is that knowledge output on security in Brazil has been dependent neither on the political persuasion of intellectuals nor on the regime in power. In fact, the whole of the Brazilian political spectrum (to the left and to the right) has derived its writings from one same set of foundational perspectives on Brazilian identity irrespectively of the political system in power (democracy/dictatorship) or the political persuasion of intellectuals.
By proposing a new approach to understanding intellectual history in Brazil and by offering critical insights into knowledge production in security, Lima not only introduces a novel framework to analyze intellectual production outside the core, she also sheds light on how security has been historically thought of outside the core. This book will provide an important contribution to the field and will be of great interest to students and scholars in areas such as critical international relations, critical security and latin american studies.
