This book provides the reader with an explanation of the major goals of synthetic biology: i) making biological tools that are understood as well as the silicon tools developed by the computer industry, ii) using these tools to do useful things within the biology we are already familiar with, such as yeast or stem cells, and iii) using these tools to make entirely new biological entities that previously did not exist in nature. The book also provides technical details of current advances toward these goals.
Darren N. Nesbeth earned his BSc in molecular biology from University College London (UCL), UK, and his PhD in molecular cell biology from Imperial College, London, UK. He did postdoctoral work on scale up of gene therapy at King's College London, UK; fundamental cell biology at Imperial College; and industrially applied cell engineering at UCL. In the UCL Department of Biochemical Engineering, he applies synthetic biology to address industrial challenges in manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals and fine chemicals.
