White Dwarfs as Probes of Fundamental Physics (IAU S357):Tracers of Planetary, Stellar and Galactic Evolution

White dwarfs are the most numerous members of the stellar graveyard. More than ninety percent of all stars will end their lives as white dwarfs. Research on these objects is fascinating in its own right, requiring developments in atomic data and the study of properties of matter under extreme conditions. However, these studies also have enormous impact on other areas of astrophysics, including: cosmology, the composition of extrasolar planets and fundamental physics. The proceedings of IAU Symposium 357 bring together experts from different branches of science working on white dwarfs, but also astronomers with expertise in a wide range of relevant disciplines. The resulting papers are organized around several key themes: SN Ia progenitors, debris from extrasolar planetary systems, fundamental physics, precision studies of white dwarf structure and stellar physics and Galactic evolution. They provide a framework for guiding the direction of white dwarf research for the next decade.

Galactic Dynamics in the Era of Large Surveys (IAU S353)
Galactic dynamics is fundamental to understanding the formation of galaxies, their internal evolution and their current structure. While galactic dynamics has traditionally focused on the evolution of the stellar components of galaxies, studies over the past two decades have shown that all aspects of galaxy evolution are strongly influenced by the interplay between the dynamics of stars, gas, and dark matter. IAU Symposium 353, is the first major symposium in more than a decade focused on the dynamics of galaxies and stellar systems, covering the recent explosion in the availability of kinematical data both for individual stars in the Milky Way and wide field line-of-sight kinematics for large samples of external galaxies. These proceedings describe recent developments that aim to transform our understanding of the dynamics, structure, formation and evolution of our own host galaxy, the Milky Way, as well as galaxies in the universe at large.

Galaxy Evolution and Feedback across Different Environments (IAU S359)
The goal of IAU Symposium 359 on 'Galaxy Evolution and Feedback across Different Environments' (GALFEED) was to bring together the active galactic nuclei (AGN) and galaxy evolution scientific communities. The AGN phase occurs in most galaxies and critically influences their evolution, so it is important to study the two processes together and for researchers, in both topics, to learn from one another. They ask key questions such as: How do galaxies acquire their gas and how efficiently is it transformed into stars? How is the supermassive black hole in a galaxy center fuelled to become an AGN? What is the main physical mechanism that quenches star formation? How powerful are the stellar and AGN feedback processes in regulating galaxy evolution? And what is the role of the environment on galaxy evolution and AGN triggering? Astronomers engage in these discussions spanning from early galaxies to the present day.

Astronomy in Focus XXX:As Presented at the IAU XXX General Assembly, 2018
Astronomy in Focus presents the most relevant contributions from the Focus Meetings included during the XXX IAU General Assembly held in Vienna, Austria, from 20–31 August 2018. Focus meetings are proposed by groups of scientists with aims to promote cross-disciplinary interactions while maintaining a well-defined focus on a particular topic. They usually address a new scientific area or an emerging field that is not well, or in some cases not at all, represented under the IAU's existing Commission structure. The XXX IAU General Assembly included six scientific symposia, a special symposium focused on the IAU's centenary and fifteen Focus Meetings. The latter comprised twelve scientific Focus Meetings plus two on the mission and activities of the IAU Offices of Astronomy Outreach and Astronomy for Development and the final one promoted by the Working Group on Global Coordination of Ground and Space Astrophysics.

Challenges in Panchromatic Modelling with Next Generation Facilities (IAU S341)
Over the past decade, modelling the panchromatic emission of galaxies has become one of the key tools in measuring their properties. As new and next-generation facilities progressively herald a new era in observational astronomy, we face new and specific challenges: LSST (recently named the Vera C. Rubin Observatory) and SKA will provide us with an avalanche of data; the advent of e-ROSITA and the preparation for Athena make it ever more pressing to include X-ray emission into the standard UV to radio panchromatic models; JWST will observe the first galaxies with extreme stellar populations; and, in the meantime, ALMA is already starting to provide us with remarkable dust and metal observations at high redshift. The proceedings of IAU Symposium 341 offer a broad overview of the state of the field from theoreticians, modellers, and observers to present and discuss the current frontier in the panchromatic modelling of galaxies.

Stellar cluster research is in a dynamic state. IAU Symposium 351 (also chosen as MODEST-19, within the 'Modelling and Observing DEnse STellar systems' meeting series) is a compilation of the research presented at the Symposium. It contains highlights of the latest research taking place in many areas, including the formation of stellar clusters at high redshifts, multiple stellar populations within stellar clusters, the dynamical evolution of stellar clusters, and the production of exotic objects such as black holes within stellar clusters. This volume also includes articles on the build up of larger galaxies from smaller galaxies and stellar clusters, and discussions of the latest data from large surveys and from the Gaia satellite. Looking at both the local and the high-redshift universe allows links to be established between the clusters we see today and their progenitors. IAU S351 is an ideal entry point for astronomers new to this research field.

The Origin of Outflows in Evolved Stars (IAU S366)
The prime parameter determining the evolution of a star is its mass. Any modification to the stellar mass has large repercussions on its evolutionary path. Both low-mass and massive stars are known to power strong stellar winds at the end of their lives. These winds determine the type of the stellar end product and the amount by which these stars contribute to the chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium, ultimately providing the building blocks of planets and life. A proper understanding of stellar evolution and the building blocks in the Universe cannot be achieved without a detailed understanding of stellar winds. IAU Symposium 366 provides an overview of state-of-the-art observational and theoretical studies on the origin of winds in low-mass and massive evolved stars, with topics including binarity, enrichment of the interstellar medium, astrochemistry, and theoretical, observational and numerical constraints on stellar outflows.

Nuclear Activity in Galaxies Across Cosmic Time (IAU S356)
IAU Symposium 356 summarises the most recent results in the field of active galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN). These are some of the most luminous sources in the Universe, also the most distant ones that we can observe, so they are very important for understanding the early Universe and its evolution through cosmic time. This volume gives an overview of the current status in the field of active galaxies including: AGN multiwavelength observations; different AGN types and their properties; AGN variability; active supermassive black holes and properties of galaxies in which they reside; triggering, feedback and shutting off AGN activity; relativistic jets and environments of active galaxies; and AGN evolution. IAU S356 was the third IAU symposium organised in Africa in the past 100 years since the IAU was established, and the first one organised in Ethiopia, highlighting current developments in astronomical research in Africa.

Uncovering Early Galaxy Evolution in the ALMA and JWST Era (IAU S352)
The first three billion years of cosmic time were the prime epoch of galaxy formation. Characterising galaxies at this epoch is therefore crucial to achieving a major goal of modern astrophysics: to understand how galaxies such as our Milky Way emerged from the primordial density fluctuations in the early Universe and how they evolved through cosmic time. Recent major international investments in observing facilities such as the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) promise to provide the next leap in our understanding of this topic. This volume gathers the scientific contributions to the International Astronomical Union Symposium 352, which was devoted to this topic. The community of theoretical and observational experts discuss how we can make the most of ALMA and JWST synergies in advancing our understanding of galaxy evolution in the young Universe.

Multi-scale (Time and Mass) Dynamics of Space Objects (IAU S364)
The range of phenomena that manifest at all different time and length scales and the wide range of sizes of space objects, from minor bodies in the Solar System to exoplanets, and from dust particles to Jupiter-size bodies, require the development of dynamical modeling and analysis tools that can handle these different scales. This volume collects contributions given by distinguished scientists at the hybrid IAU Symposium 364. The methods in dynamics modeling of space objects have already reached a state of maturity, and their implementation provided a large number of important results pertaining to both the theory and their applications. The contributions cover the recent advances in the multi-scale dynamics of natural and artificial space objects from various perspectives, which will benefit graduate students and researchers working in the fields of celestial mechanics, astrodynamics, planetary sciences, applied mathematics and dynamical systems.
