It goes in depth into Buddhist terminology, concepts, quotes, persons, places, expressions, and historical events. We offer this glossary to the Fo Gang Shan community, translators, and sentient beings from all walks of life to assist them in their understanding and rendition of Buddhist literature.

Volume five of Studies on Humanistic Buddhism contains eight articles translated from Chinese, one article that was written in English, and four student papers. The theme of the articles is Humanistic Chan Buddhism, particularly Fo Guang Chan as developed by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. The articles in this volume give us a taste of the flavor of Chan. We see that Chan is both prosaic and profound. Chan emphasizes the cultivation of wisdom through practice in everyday life.

Volume four of Studies on Humanistic Buddhism contains eight translated articles, two commentaries, two original articles, and a perspective piece all relating to human life. Human life is a topic with a vast scope. It was chosen because it is central to Humanistic Buddhism. As several articles in this volume and previous volumes discuss, Humanistic Buddhism developed as a response to the perception that Buddhism no longer related directly to human life. By the nineteenth century in China, Buddhism was seen to provide what came to be mainly perfunctory rituals to be performed upon the death of a family member. Humanistic Buddhism revived Buddhism as an intrinsic part of daily life.

The seventh volume of Studies on Humanistic Buddhism explores the application of Buddhist wisdom to contemporary management. The volume contains ten articles—eight translated from Chinese and two written in English (McKenzie and Goirand, Starlyte)—as well as two student papers. The topics range from the management of business enterprises, educational and monastic organizations, the self, and even the creation of a Pure Land. A unifying theme across the articles is the insight that cultivating one’s own mind is the foundation for effectively managing others. As Huang Kuo-Ching noted in an earlier volume of this journal, “Venerable Master Hsing Yun pointed out that the core aspect of management lies in management of the mind. Moreover, a leader must have the ability to manage one’s mind before managing that of others.” This underscores the central message of this volume: effective leadership begins with self-management.
