Styles of Memory offers a rich philosophical investigation into cinema's unique power to enlist viewers in the imaginative construction of experience. Drawing on close readings of three major works by Terrence Malick, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Krzysztof Kieslowski, this book explores how film can do philosophical work-how images and sounds, in their unfolding, probe the existential conditions of memory, imagination, and the self. At the center of the book is the claim that film does not merely depict memory but stages forms of remembering, imagining, and dreaming within its very fabric.
