本書特色★本書為香港中文大學伊斯蘭文化研究中心「東亞伊斯蘭研究叢書」之一★以「關鍵字」為切入點，彙編近300條《清實錄》中伊斯蘭教相關史料★林長寬教授專序推薦序【序】林長寬（國立成功大學文學院多元文化研究中心召集人） 伊斯蘭或穆斯林在中國地區（the Middle Kingdom）不同朝代發展的研究，其歷史並不如中土伊斯蘭的研究來得長，因而極有開發的遠景。一般而言，中國伊斯蘭（Islam in China）或穆斯林（Chinese Muslims）的研究可有二種不同途徑，即分別置於伊斯蘭文化或中國民族研究框架中，各有不同的強調。前者屬於形而上的宗教研究（Religious Studies），後者則是以人為主的少數族群研究（Minority Studies），可歸類於民族學領域。就西方伊斯蘭研究（Islamic Studies）傳統而言，在中國伊斯蘭方面，從十九世紀至今，早已擺脫基督教會傳教士的「他信仰（other faith）研究」傳統（其目的在於對穆斯林宣教），轉而進入廣義伊斯蘭研究，針對穆斯林族群行跨領域整合的研究，但仍較少在神學或哲學思想上著墨。而新生代學者也試圖結合「中國研究」（China Studies）與「伊斯蘭研究」，開創新的途徑。 伊斯蘭在中國（或中國地區穆斯林群體）的發展到了蒙元時期方有較明確的文獻記載；而那些中文資料中除了官史之外，少有民間或穆斯林社群自我的紀錄。整體而言，明末以前中國穆斯林可謂「有史無料」；而所謂的史料即是記述穆斯林社群的零碎訊息。之所以有此現象其主要原因乃穆斯林進入中國地區後，原有宗教傳統因逐漸漢化（Sinicization）或在地化（localization）而被淹沒在以儒、道為主流的漢文化社會中。穆斯林隨蒙古人入主中國地區後，即成為歷朝各代的子民（ruled subject），為了存續必得奉儒家為正朔，致使伊斯蘭信仰、儀式逐漸式微。而明朝建立後，統治者所推動的「去胡化」政策導致更難對外來的伊斯蘭宗教或穆斯林社群有所關注與報導。 這種情況到了滿清建國後稍有改變。中國穆斯林因整個伊斯蘭世界的復興改革思潮與蘇非道團（Sufi Tariqah）的流通，意識到其宗教傳統流失的危機，遂有所謂中國穆斯林的復興改革，也因此有大量漢文伊斯蘭著作（Han Kitab）的出現。基本上，這些著作並不被列入正式的官方文獻中，這也是研究中國伊
