This book, Chiang Yee and His Circle: Chinese Artistic and Intellectual Life in Britain, 1930–1950, celebrates the life and work of Chiang Yee (1903–1977), a Chinese writer, poet, and painter who made his home in London, England during the 1930s and 1940s. It examines Chiang’s relationship with his circle of friends and colleagues in the English capital, and assesses the work he produced during his sojourn there. This edited volume, with contributions from eleven distinguished scholars, tells a story of a Chinese intellectual community in London that up to now has been largely overlooked. Empowered by Ancestors: Controversy over the Imperial Temple in Song China (960–1279) examines the enduring tension between cultural authority and political power in imperial China by inquiring into Song ritual debates over the Imperial Temple. During these debates, Song-educated elites utilized various discourses to rectify temple rituals in their own ways. In this process, political interests were less emphasized and even detached from ritual discussions. Meanwhile, Song scholars of particular schools developed various ritual theories that were used to reshape society in later periods. Hence, the Song ritual debates exemplified the great transmission of ancestral ritual norms from the top stratum of imperial court downward to society. In this book, the author attempts to provide a lens through which historians, anthropologists, experts in Chinese Classics, and scholars from other disciplines can explore Chinese ritual in its intellectual, social, and political forms.

The essays in this volume grew from a series of talks delivered in late 2010 as the Liang Qichao Memorial Lectures at the Academy of National Learning (Guoxue yuan) of Tsinghua University, Beijing. A Pragmatist and His Free Spirit portrays the unconventional love of Hu Shi, a Chinese social reformer and civil rights pioneer, and Edith Clifford Williams, an American avant-garde artist of the early twentieth century. Hu studied at Cornell University, where he first met Williams, and Columbia University, where he worked with the famous pragmatist John Dewey. At the time of his death in 1962, he and Williams had exchanged more than 300 letters that, along with poems and excerpts from Hu's diaries and documents (some of which have never before been translated into English) form the center of this book. 特別獨家收入：余英時接受第一屆唐獎漢學獎　受獎致詞、接受唐獎演講全文──中國史研究的自我反思 〈接受克魯格獎講詞〉／〈接受唐獎漢學獎講詞〉，最重要的余英時學思歷程自述 「知識人」（intellectual）是十八世紀之後才在西方出現的概念， 中國則自先秦時代便有「士」的階層，並形成一個延續不斷的傳統。 從士轉變為知識人，代表「士」文化的斷裂， 也象徵華人價值體系的巨大轉變。 中央研究院院士、美國哲學會會士、克魯格獎、唐獎漢學獎得主 ──余英時，重要人文思想研究之作，全新編輯校對，絕版經典再現 爬梳中國知識人與價值體系之間交相形塑、影響的綿密關係。 本書收入余英時先生在1980年代之後研究的菁華，論述知識人在中國的歷史淵源、意義等面向，及其流變對價值意識的影響。但本書意旨並不侷限在「過去」與「中國」；作者觀照中、西知識人在追尋真理上的差異，探討中國文化價值體系為何有其獨特性（中國知識人求「內向超越」，西方則是「外在超越」）。在西方人文研究重新檢視「現代以後」（post-modern）價值轉向的今日，本書對於瞭解華人安身立命的價值觀亦有偌大助益。 書中旁徵博引，釐清許多過去讀者可能不甚了了的見解。拿科舉制度來說，漢朝的按地區人口多寡設定各郡縣舉薦名額，因而有幾分「代議制度」的味道；宋人歐陽修、司馬光在「選賢唯才」（近似「全國聯招」）或是「逐路取人」（各地方有基本名額的保障）上，立場相左，是因為出身地域不同（歐陽為文化薈萃、中舉人數較多的江南，司馬則為風華不再的江北）。而漢朝董仲舒建請武帝「罷黜百家」，其實儒家也在罷黜之列，因為他要獨尊的是諸子百家均奉為聖典的「五經」（詩、書、禮、易、春秋），而非以「五經」為不二規臬的「儒術」。（見第八篇，〈試說科舉在中國史上的功能與意義〉） 又如，共產黨深知「士可殺，不可辱」的價值觀深植於讀書人心中，因此文革期間對於文人「只辱不殺」，目的就是要讓他們生不如死（而且自殺會禍延家人，行不得）。而幾十年來極力摧毀傳統知識人價值體系的後果，就是今日中國大陸學術剽竊、「黑心」商業屢見不鮮，被舉發時只嘆運氣好而不覺羞愧。（參見第五篇，〈價值荒原上的儒家幽靈〉） 余英時先生更精闢指出，價值意識一方面淵源於傳統，一方面植根於生活的實踐，不是少數人可以憑空創造而強加於整個社會的。只要社會本身有其相對的獨立性──相對於國家（state）的權力而言，

我們這一代知識份子的責任 ──士不可不弘毅，任重而道遠── 寧鳴而死，不默而生； 成為光，做黑暗中的明燈， 以言論昭亮人目和人心，昭明政治和社會。 五四運動的時候，當時的北大校長蔡孑民先生曾以「愛國不忘求學，求學不忘愛國」兩句話勉勵青年學子，對於今天的青年學生和知識份子而言，其依然是不移的真理。已故的臺大校長傅孟真先生也一再以「敦品、力學、愛國、愛人」訓勉臺大學生，要求他們做到「知識的誠實」（intellectual honesty），養成立信的人格與愛國的情操。竭智盡忠，發揚優秀的文化內涵，建立現代化的民主社會國家。 《大學雜誌》的宗旨：以建立現代化民主國家為信念。始終堅持立場，善盡言責，對國是問題曾經提過許多大膽而嚴正的諍言，一本初衷，以知識份子的身分，提供建設性的意見。《大學雜誌》不是政治團體，而是表達社會公正輿論的公器，絕不容許成為任何私人的工具。 《大學雜誌》命名緣由，引述四書《大學》開宗明義說的：「大學之道，在明明德，在親民，在止於至善。」稱本刊的命名，即源於此。所以《大學雜誌》並不是一本全以大學生為對象的讀物，更不是某一大學的校刊。它是為了每一位愛好新知、關心現實的朋友創辦的。 《大學雜誌》曾宣示的努力的方向有三，在立言方面，將以知識分子的理性良知為準繩，對當前國是問題提出嚴肅的諍言。在處理稿件方面，對於各種不同的意見，只要是出自善意，都樂於刊用。尤其是對《大學雜誌》社論提出批評的，更是歡迎。在內容方面，除繼續加強政論時評外，將努力充實有關知識性、思想性和文藝性的文章。 作為知識份子的我們，是有理由感到驕傲與光榮的，因為歷來的知識份子具有言論報國的一種良好傳統。胡適之先生曾經引述九百多年前宋朝范仲淹在其〈靈烏賦〉裡的爭自由的名言──「寧鳴而死，不默而生」，說明歷來知識份子認為諫諍是一種天生的責任，是一種極好的傳統。范仲淹寫這篇賦大概是在景祐三年（1036），所以這比美國開國前期亨利柏德烈（Patrick Henry）在1775年所說的爭自由的名言──「不自由，毋寧死」──還要早740年。但我們爭自由的成績如何？尤其是我們這一代的知識份子究竟盡了多少責任？陶百川先生曾疾呼知識份子應該善盡各人的職責，背起各人的十字架，成為光，做黑暗中的明燈，以言論昭亮人目和人心，昭明政治和社會。 從國家與政府的立場看，言論的自由可以鼓勵人人肯說「憂於未形，恐
