Both primary and secondary sources are included in each chapter to give context, perspective, and a historian's insights to the documents. The author notes that he considers the book a starting place for readers wanting to know more about the war, and that little documentation of the insurgents' point of view of the conflict exists and that much vital information will continue to be classified and inaccessible for many years.
