Deliberative Democracy in Practice

A new research paradigm in normative political philosophy, deliberative democracy is characterized here as believing that democracy should entail an exchange of reasons rather than just a confrontation of interests, and that the justification of policies should be more democratic. North American political scientists and related scholars explore the new territory from the broad perspectives of educating deliberative citizens, constitutions and the boundaries of deliberation, indigenous peoples, and citizen dialogue and decision making. Specific topics include religious education and democratic character, whether democracy is a means to global justice, the politics of reconciliation, and public opinion and popular will.
