In a postcolonial reading of the Irish Gothic tradition, Hansen (English and critical theory, U. of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign) argues that the masculine gender anxiety characterizing the fiction of Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, and Samuel Beckett grows out of and responds to the 19th-century Anglo-Irish Gothic's confrontation with British colonial politics. He begins with Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France, which appeared in 1790 on the eve of the 1798 Irish rebellion and resulting Act of Union in 1801. From there he moves through Charles Robert Maturin's early Irish Gothic novels, to Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, Joyce's Ulysses, and Beckett's Trilogy.
