For the years of 1987-89, Haigh lived in Khaling, Bhutan, teaching school. At the time he was a young Canadian with a Masters in English and a desire to try something new. His memoir of his time there is a tale of confusion, culture shock and disappointment. It is also one of revelation, pride and growth. Haigh's experience mirrors that of many idealistic people who want to learn about another culture while doing some good. Through frustration and successes, he grew to love Khaling. But even after two years he knew he would always be an outsider. His story is sad, funny and bittersweet. It also makes clear how little practical preparation is given to volunteer teachers in these programs. This might be read as a picture of a little known and probably dying culture.
