Autonomous Learning in the Workplace

Traditionally, organizations and researchers have focused on learning that occurs through formal training and development programs. However, the realities of today’s workplace suggest that it will be difficult, if not impossible, for organizations to continue to rely mainly on formal programs for developing human capital. Self-motivated learning is important from the employee’s perspective as today’s boundaryless careers require a personal initiative to learn that goes beyond formal training events.

This volume will offer a broad-based treatment of autonomous learning for the purpose of advancing our understanding of learner-driven approaches and how organizations can support them. Synthesizing research on self-directed learning, proactive learning behaviors, mentoring, and strategic training and development, among others, this text will provide a single, comprehensive resource for accessing this literature. The book will appeal to researchers and graduates in management, training and leadership, and educational psychology.

Jill E. Ellingson is an Associate Professor of Human Resource Management in the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University, USA. Dr. Ellingson's work has been honored with the SIOP Foundation Jeanneret Award for Excellence in the Study of Individual or Group Assessment (2013) and has been published in leading journals. She currently serves as an Associate Editor at the Journal of Applied Psychology.

Raymond A. Noe is Robert and Anne Hoyt Designated Professor of Management in the Department of Management and Human Resources at The Ohio State University, USA. He has received teaching and research awards including the Herbert G. Heneman Distinguished Teaching Award, Ernest J. McCormick Award for Early Career Contribution from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and the ASTD Outstanding Research Article of the Year.
