Stuart Dynastic Policy and Religious Politics, 1621-1625(Volume 34)
90折
作者:Michael Questier  出版社:Cambridge Univ Pr  出版日:2010/01/18 裝訂:精裝
This volume reproduces, with an extended introduction, a series of newsletters and position papers composed by Catholic writers in England, France, Flanders and Rome during the early 1620s. The principal topic of their correspondence was the dynastic foreign policy of the Stuart court and the intention of King James I to guarantee the succession of the senior line of the House of Stuart. As these letters commence, the Stuart court was determined to secure a marital match with the Spanish branch of the House of Austria. When this project failed in the summer of 1624, the Stuarts' dynastic diplomacy focused on an Anglo-French treaty instead. However, the political difficulties caused by this attempt to secure a cross-confessional dynastic union with a major European Catholic power threatened the internal political stability of the Stuart State and directly contributed to the unsettled nature of the Caroline polity after 1625.

Newsletters from the Caroline Court, 1631–1638:Catholicism and the Politics of the Personal Rule:VOLUME26
90折
作者:Michael C. Questier  出版社:Cambridge Univ Pr  出版日:2005/11/10 裝訂:精裝
The newsletters printed in this volume were written by Catholics who had access to the Court of Charles I and Henrietta Maria during the 1630s. The letters' principal concern was the factional strife among English Catholics, particularly over the issue of whether they should be subject to the authority of a Catholic bishop appointed by the papacy to live and rule over them in England. But these letters also contain Court news and gossip, information about foreign policy issues, and comment on the contemporary Church-of-England controversies over theology and clerical conformity. They are an important source for the study of the ideological tone of the Caroline Court, and of the ambition of certain sections of the Catholic community to secure a form of legal tolerance from the crown.

Catholicism and Community in Early Modern England ─ Politics, Aristocratic Patronage and Religion, c. 1550-1640
作者:Michael C. Questier  出版社:Cambridge Univ Pr  出版日:2006/04/13 裝訂:精裝
This is a study of the political, religious, social and mental worlds of the Catholic aristocracy from 1550 to 1640. Michael Questier examines the familial and patronage networks of the English Catholic community and their relationship to the later Tudors and Stuarts. He shows how the local history of the Reformation can be used to rewrite mainstream accounts of national politics and religious conflict in this period. The book takes in the various crises of mid- and late Elizabeth politics, the accession of James VI, the Gunpowder Plot, religious toleration and the start of the Thirty Years War and finally the rise of Laudianism, leading up to the civil war. It challenges recent historical notions of Catholicism as fundamentally sectarian and demonstrates the extent to which sections of the Catholic community had come to an understanding with both the local and national State by the later 1620s and 1630s.

Conversion, Politics and Religion in England, 1580–1625
作者:Michael C. Questier  出版社:Cambridge Univ Pr  出版日:1996/08/29 裝訂:精裝
The Reformation was, in many ways, an experiment in conversion. English Protestants urged conversion from popery to the Gospel, from idolatry to the true God, while Catholic polemicists persuaded people away from heresy to Catholic truth, from schism to unity. Michael Questier's meticulous study of conversion is the first to concentrate on this phenomenon from the perspective of individual converts, people who alternated between conformity to and rejection of the pattern of worship established by law. Since religion was a matter of great political importance, this book also investigates the power of the State to compel uniformity, and the success of the Protestant regime in directing dissidents to conform. By discovering how people were exhorted to change religion, how they experienced conversion, and how they faced demands for Protestant conformity, Michael Questier develops a fresh view of the English Reformation.
