The 'student of clouds' Luke Howard (1772–1864) published this work of statistics on weather conditions in London in two volumes, in 1818 and 1820. Howard was by profession an industrial chemist, but his great interest in meteorology led to his studies on clouds (also reissued in this series), and his devising of the system of Latin cloud names which was adopted internationally and is still in use. Volume 2 contains a preface in which Howard discusses the reasons for the order of presentation of his material, which, he disarmingly admits with hindsight, might have been improved. The tabular material in this volume, supplied with notes and commentary citing published reports from around Europe, comes from observations made at Tottenham in the period 1817–19. This historic material will be of interest to environmental scientists as well as to those interested in the history of meteorology.

They respectively describe the 'sea' manuscripts, relating to maritime and naval matters, the early printed books, the medieval manuscripts, and the books on shorthand, providing notes about authors, bibliographic history, and other contextual information. Originally published as a limited edition of 500 copies each, these valuable reference works are now made available again.

Volume 4 describes the books about shorthand which Pepys – an enthusiastic practitioner himself - methodically collected, and had bound in five volumes. Over the centuries, various specialists had consulted this important collection but this catalogue brought it to the attention of bibliographers for the first time. It provides background information about the author of each work, places the content in its historical context and supplies bibliographic details together with notes about other surviving copies. It is a valuable resource for historians of stenography and its uses.

It then lists and describes the early printed books, with notes as to special features, other extant copies and publication history, among them several liturgical books in the Sarum rite and 1557 editions of Malory's La morte d'Arthur and the works of Thomas More. It also includes an index of printers. This catalogue remains a valuable resource for researchers in early publishing history and seventeenth-century studies.

In this volume Eric Watkins brings together new English translations of Kant's first publication, Thoughts on the True Estimation of Living Forces (1746–9), the entirety of Physical Geography (1802), a series of shorter essays, along with many of Kant's most important publications in natural science.
