In this 1963 volume, Mr Hanson's aim was to record from the principal libraries of Great Britain and Ireland all new works on economic affairs published in the first half of the eighteenth century. The entries are arranged chronologically by years of publication, and the entries for each year are subdivided. A single entry comprises author's name, title, place of publication, date, size, and location. The titles are transcribed fairly fully to avoid ambiguity or confusion. First editions only are given full entries; subsequent editions or reissues are recorded in footnotes. Altogether there are little over 6500 main entries. The comprehensive indexes are an important feature of the book. An index of titles brings the complete material into alphabetical order; and a general index of authors and subjects ensures that the book can be used selectively.

In common with republicanism or socialism in continental Europe, Liberalism in nineteenth-century Britain was a mass movement. By focussing on the period between the 1860s and the 1880s, this book sets out to explain why and how that happened, and to examine the people who supported it, their beliefs, and the way in which the latter related to one another and to reality. Popular suport for the Liberal party was not irrational in either its objectives or its motivations: on the contrary, its dissemination was due to the fact that the programme of reforms proposed by the party leaders offered convincing solutions to some of the problems perceived as being the most urgent at the time. The eminent art historian Gerard Baldwin Brown (1849–1932) held, for fifty years, the first Chair in the History of Art in Britain at the University of Edinburgh. He published on a wide range of art and architecture; his major work was the six-volume Arts in Early England (1903–1937). His interest in the wider social context of art was reflected in his concern for the preservation of ancient monuments for the public. It was after the publication of the present book in 1906 that Brown was appointed member of a Royal Commission to compile an inventory of ancient Scottish monuments.
