This eight-volume set of summaries of state documents (commemoriali) of the Republic of Venice was compiled and edited by Riccardo Predelli (1842–1909), and appeared between 1876 and 1914 as part of a wider series, 'Monumenti Storici', which was devoted to publishing the content of the nine-hundred-year-old archives of Venice at a time when the original documents seemed in danger of being lost through decay. Predelli notes in his preface that a similar concern was expressed by Doge Iacopo Tiepolo, who in 1248 ordered a commission to sort and codify the legal statutes of the city, which were in complete confusion. The works, arranged roughly in chronological order, provide summaries (and sometimes complete documents) of the political, diplomatic, commercial and legal activities of the Republic, and are a fascinating resource for researchers and students. The eight volumes cover documents from the eleventh to the eighteenth centuries.
Set against the chequered background of Rome, the city of the six Ps - Pope, priests, princes, prostitutes, parasites and the poor - Belli's sometimes scandalous sonnets deal with life's elementals: love, death, sex, food, money, family, religion and politics. In his immense oeuvre, sampled here in a sizeable and varied selection of the best poems, people from every course and manner of life have their say - housewives, mothers, beggars, lovers, businessmen, popes, whores, doctors, thieves, lawyers, priests, pen-pushers, actresses, gossips and many more. Their voices and preoccupations are brilliantly and accurately rendered in this dual-language volume by prize-winning novelist and poet Mike Stocks, one of the finest sonneteers of our day.
In this companion to Arree Chung's stand-out picture book Mixed: A Colorful Story, the colors must re-evaluate what it means to be a family. In Mixed City, when colors care for each other, they decide to mix. They create families that come in every combination of colors, shapes, and sizes. But sometimes those sizes, shapes, and colors can change. And change isn't always easy. It might be hard to get used to. It might make some colors feel worried, or sad. This inspiring book celebrates the strength and resilience of remixed families and the beauty of chosen families, showing how even after change, or loss, love can thrive.
