An Introduction to General Relativity
This textbook provides an introduction to general relativity for mathematics undergraduates or graduate physicists. After a review of Cartesian tensor notation and special relativity the concepts of Riemannian differential geometry are introducted. More emphasis is placed on an intuitive grasp of the subject and a calculational facility than on a rigorous mathematical exposition. General relativity is then presented as a relativistic theory of gravity reducing in the appropriate limits to Newtonian gravity or special relativity. The Schwarzchild solution is derived and the gravitational red-shift, time dilation and classic tests of general relativity are discussed. There is a brief account of gravitational collapse and black holes based on the extended Schwarzchild solution. Other vacuum solutions are described, motivated by their counterparts in linearised general relativity. The book ends with chapters on cosmological solutions to the field equations. There are exercises attached to

An Introduction to Hankel Operators
Hankel operators are of wide application in mathematics (functional analysis, operator theory, approximation theory) and engineering (control theory, systems analysis) and this account of them is both elementary and rigorous. The book is based on graduate lectures given to an audience of mathematicians and control engineers, but to make it reasonably self-contained, the author has included several appendices on mathematical topics unlikely to be met by undergraduate engineers. The main prerequisites are basic complex analysis and some functional analysis, but the presentation is kept straightforward, avoiding unnecessary technicalities so that the fundamental results and their applications are evident. Some 45 exercises are included.

Lectures on Kähler Geometry
Kähler geometry is a beautiful and intriguing area of mathematics, of substantial research interest to both mathematicians and physicists. This self-contained graduate text provides a concise and accessible introduction to the topic. The book begins with a review of basic differential geometry, before moving on to a description of complex manifolds and holomorphic vector bundles. Kähler manifolds are discussed from the point of view of Riemannian geometry, and Hodge and Dolbeault theories are outlined, together with a simple proof of the famous Kähler identities. The final part of the text studies several aspects of compact Kähler manifolds: the Calabi conjecture, Weitzenböck techniques, Calabi–Yau manifolds, and divisors. All sections of the book end with a series of exercises and students and researchers working in the fields of algebraic and differential geometry and theoretical physics will find that the book provides them with a sound understanding of this theory.

An Introduction to K-Theory for C*-Algebras
Over the last 25 years K-theory has become an integrated part of the study of C*-algebras. This book gives an elementary introduction to this interesting and rapidly growing area of mathematics. Fundamental to K-theory is the association of a pair of Abelian groups, K0(A) and K1(A), to each C*-algebra A. These groups reflect the properties of A in many ways. This book covers the basic properties of the functors K0 and K1 and their interrelationship. Applications of the theory include Elliott's classification theorem for AF-algebras, and it is shown that each pair of countable Abelian groups arises as the K-groups of some C*-algebra. The theory is well illustrated with 120 exercises and examples, making the book ideal for beginning graduate students working in functional analysis, especially operator algebras, and for researchers from other areas of mathematics who want to learn about this subject.

Theory of Vortex Sound
The book is an introduction to the branch of fluid mechanics concerned with the production of sound by hydrodynamic flows. It is designed for a one semester introductory course at advanced undergraduate or graduate level. Great care is taken to explain underlying fluid mechanical and acoustic concepts, and to describe as fully as possible the steps in a complicated derivation. The discussion deals specifically with low Mach number flows, which enables the sound produced by 'vortex-surface' interactions to be analysed using the 'compact Green's function'. This provides a routine procedure for estimating the sound, and an easy identification of those parts of a structure that are likely to be important sources of sound. Each chapter ends with a set of problems, many of which can form the basis of an extended student project. The final chapter contains worked examples that have been investigated by students at Boston University.

The Prime Number Theorem
At first glance the prime numbers appear to be distributed in a very irregular way amongst the integers, but it is possible to produce a simple formula that tells us (in an approximate but well defined sense) how many primes we can expect to find that are less than any integer we might choose. The prime number theorem tells us what this formula is and it is indisputably one of the great classical theorems of mathematics. This textbook gives an introduction to the prime number theorem suitable for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. The author's aim is to show the reader how the tools of analysis can be used in number theory to attack a 'real' problem, and it is based on his own experiences of teaching this material.

Linear Operators and Linear Systems:An Analytical Approach to Control Theory
Linear systems can be regarded as a causal shift-invariant operator on a Hilbert space of signals, and by doing so this book presents an introduction to the common ground between operator theory and linear systems theory. The book therefore includes material on pure mathematical topics such as Hardy spaces, closed operators, the gap metric, semigroups, shift-invariant subspaces, the commutant lifting theorem and almost-periodic functions, which would be entirely suitable for a course in functional analysis; at the same time, the book includes applications to partial differential equations, to the stability and stabilization of linear systems, to power signal spaces (including some recent material not previously available in books), and to delay systems, treated from an input/output point of view. Suitable for students of analysis, this book also acts as an introduction to a mathematical approach to systems and control for graduate students in departments of applied mathematics or engin

Geometric and Topological Inference
Geometric and topological inference deals with the retrieval of information about a geometric object using only a finite set of possibly noisy sample points. It has connections to manifold learning and provides the mathematical and algorithmic foundations of the rapidly evolving field of topological data analysis. Building on a rigorous treatment of simplicial complexes and distance functions, this self-contained book covers key aspects of the field, from data representation and combinatorial questions to manifold reconstruction and persistent homology. It can serve as a textbook for graduate students or researchers in mathematics, computer science and engineering interested in a geometric approach to data science.

Motivic Integration and Its Interactions with Model Theory and Non-Archimedean Geometry
The development of Maxim Kontsevich's initial ideas on motivic integration has unexpectedly influenced many other areas of mathematics, ranging from the Langlands program over harmonic analysis, to non-Archimedean analysis, singularity theory and birational geometry. This book assembles the different theories of motivic integration and their applications for the first time, allowing readers to compare different approaches and assess their individual strengths. All of the necessary background is provided to make the book accessible to graduate students and researchers from algebraic geometry, model theory and number theory. Applications in several areas are included so that readers can see motivic integration at work in other domains. In a rapidly-evolving area of research this book will prove invaluable. This first volume contains introductory texts on the model theory of valued fields, different approaches to non-Archimedean geometry, and motivic integration on algebraic varieties and

An Introduction to Polynomial and Semi-algebraic Optimization
This is the first comprehensive introduction to the powerful moment approach for solving global optimization problems (and some related problems) described by polynomials (and even semi-algebraic functions). In particular, the author explains how to use relatively recent results from real algebraic geometry to provide a systematic numerical scheme for computing the optimal value and global minimizers. Indeed, among other things, powerful positivity certificates from real algebraic geometry allow one to define an appropriate hierarchy of semidefinite (SOS) relaxations or LP relaxations whose optimal values converge to the global minimum. Several extensions to related optimization problems are also described. Graduate students, engineers and researchers entering the field can use this book to understand, experiment with and master this new approach through the simple worked examples provided.

Theory and Synthesis of Linear Passive Time-Invariant Networks
Exploring the overlap of mathematics and engineering network synthesis, this book presents a rigorous treatment of the key principles underpinning linear lumped passive time-invariant networks. Based around a series of lectures given by the author, this thoughtfully written book draws on his wide experience in the field, carefully revealing the essential mathematical structure of network synthesis problems. Topics covered include passive n-ports, broadband matching, the design of passive multiplexes and two-state passive devices. It also includes material not usually found in existing texts, such as the theoretical behavior of transverse electromagnetic (TEM) coupled transmission lines. Introducing fundamental principles in a formal theorem-proof style, illustrated by worked examples, this book is an invaluable resource for graduate students studying linear networks and circuit design, academic researchers, and professional circuit engineers.

An Introduction to Stochastic Dynamics
The mathematical theory of stochastic dynamics has become an important tool in the modeling of uncertainty in many complex biological, physical, and chemical systems and in engineering applications - for example, gene regulation systems, neuronal networks, geophysical flows, climate dynamics, chemical reaction systems, nanocomposites, and communication systems. It is now understood that these systems are often subject to random influences, which can significantly impact their evolution. This book serves as a concise introductory text on stochastic dynamics for applied mathematicians and scientists. Starting from the knowledge base typical for beginning graduate students in applied mathematics, it introduces the basic tools from probability and analysis and then develops for stochastic systems the properties traditionally calculated for deterministic systems. The book's final chapter opens the door to modeling in non-Gaussian situations, typical of many real-world applications. Rich wit

Classical and Discrete Functional Analysis with Measure Theory
Functional analysis deals with infinite-dimensional spaces. Its results are among the greatest achievements of modern mathematics and it has wide-reaching applications to probability theory, statistics, economics, classical and quantum physics, chemistry, engineering, and pure mathematics. This book deals with measure theory and discrete aspects of functional analysis, including Fourier series, sequence spaces, matrix maps, and summability. Based on the author's extensive teaching experience, the text is accessible to advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate students. It can be used as a basis for a one-term course or for a one-year sequence, and is suitable for self-study for readers with an undergraduate-level understanding of real analysis and linear algebra. More than 750 exercises are included to help the reader test their understanding. Key background material is summarized in the Preliminaries.

Rarefied Gas Dynamics:From Basic Concepts to Actual Calculations
This book presents the concepts, methods and applications of kinetic theory to rarefied gas dynamics. After introducing the basic tools, problems in plane geometry are treated using approximation techniques (perturbation and numerical methods). These same techniques are later used to deal with two- and three-dimensional problems. The models include not only monatomic but also polyatomic gases, mixtures, chemical reactions. A special chapter is devoted to evaporation and condensation phenomena. Each section is accompanied by problems which are mainly intended to demonstrate the use of the material in the text and to outline additional subjects, results and equations. This will help ensure that the book can be used for a range of graduate courses in aerospace engineering or applied mathematics.

An Introduction to Twistor Theory
This book is an introduction to twistor theory and modern geometrical approaches to space-time structure at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level. The choice of material presented has evolved from graduate lectures given in London and Oxford and the authors have aimed to retain the informal tone of those lectures. The book will provide graduate students with an introduction to the literature of twistor theory, presupposing some knowledge of special relativity and differential geometry. It would also be of use for a short course on space-time structure independently of twistor theory. The physicist could be introduced gently to some of the mathematics which has proved useful in these areas, and the mathematician could be shown where sheaf cohomology and complex manifold theory can be used in physics.

Applied Analysis of the Navier-Stokes Equations
The Navier–Stokes equations are a set of nonlinear partial differential equations comprising the fundamental dynamical description of fluid motion. They are applied routinely to problems in engineering, geophysics, astrophysics, and atmospheric science. This book is an introductory physical and mathematical presentation of the Navier–Stokes equations, focusing on unresolved questions of the regularity of solutions in three spatial dimensions, and the relation of these issues to the physical phenomenon of turbulent fluid motion. Intended for graduate students and researchers in applied mathematics and theoretical physics, results and techniques from nonlinear functional analysis are introduced as needed with an eye toward communicating the essential ideas behind the rigorous analyses.

Scaling
Many phenomena in nature, engineering or society when seen at an intermediate distance, in space or time, exhibit the remarkable property of self-similarity: they reproduce themselves as scales change, subject to so-called scaling laws. It's crucial to know the details of these laws, so that mathematical models can be properly formulated and analysed, and the phenomena in question can be more deeply understood. In this 2003 book, the author describes and teaches the art of discovering scaling laws, starting from dimensional analysis and physical similarity, which are here given a modern treatment. He demonstrates the concepts of intermediate asymptotics and the renormalisation group as natural attributes of self-similarity and shows how and when these notions and tools can be used to tackle the task at hand, and when they cannot. Based on courses taught to undergraduate and graduate students, the book can also be used for self-study by biologists, chemists, astronomers, engineers and g
