江西是中國抗日戰爭的重要戰場。從1938年6月，日軍攻佔馬當要塞，到1945年8月，日本宣佈無條件投降，江西境內先後進行了長江要塞馬當保衛戰、南潯會戰、南昌會戰、上高會戰、浙贛會戰、湘粵贛邊區作戰、贛江追擊戰等大規模抗擊日寇的戰役，基本守住了境內相對穩定的對日作戰線、相持線，始終沒有全境淪陷，為支撐東南抗戰，屏蔽西南大後方，堅持全國持久抗戰直至最後勝利作出了重要貢獻。在這場艱苦卓絕的全民抗戰中，江西貢獻了103萬兵員，全省人口減少近240萬人。其中，有50余萬人慘遭日軍屠殺，有近100萬人在極端艱苦的戰爭環境中自然減員或逃往外省。日軍製造了湖口縣“空襲慘案”、九江“岷山慘案”、新建縣“西山慘案”等系列慘案，屍橫片野、罪行累累、令人髮指。這些鐵一般的數字與慘案是無數軍民的慘痛記憶與血淚控訴。為銘記歷史，以史為鑒，珍愛和平，江西省檔案館編纂出版《江西抗戰撫恤檔案彙編》。全書共三冊，選取檔案383件1494頁，全部來自江西省檔案館。本書所選檔案時間跨度為一九三八年至一九四八年，內容分為撫恤規章制度、撫恤工作管理及撫恤人員名錄三部分，反映了抗戰期間以及勝利後民國江西省政府及有關機構開展撫恤工作的情況。
