Donald MacKinnon, Emeritus Professor of Divinity at Cambridge, has been the most influential philosopher of religion in Britain during the twentieth century. His work has ranged widely, covering such topics as the metaphysics of Aristotle, the ethical significance of tragedy, Kant's epistemology, Christology, the relations between Marxism and Christianity, and trinitarian reflection. The essays in this volume constitute the proceedings of a conference on MacKinnon's work, held in Cambridge in 1986. They take as their starting point the writings of Professor MacKinnon, and are presented to him by colleagues, students and friends on his seventy-fifth birthday. This multi-contributor volume covers such topics as: the relation between Barth's theology and MacKinnon's thought; the controversy between realism and idealism; Trinity and ontology; incarnation and kenosis; the problem of evil; and MacKinnon and ethical reflections.

This book is the outgrowth of a memorial conference to honour the scientific contributions of Robert B. Cairns, an internationally recognised interdisciplinary developmental scientist. UV and X-ray spectroscopy of astrophysical and laboratory plasmas draws interest from many disciplines. Contributions from international specialists are collected together in this book from a timely recent conference. This book colourfully examines a famous Jeffersonian document which set the precedent for the US Constitution's guarantee of religious liberty. Jefferson wrote the Virginia Statute, shepherded it through a decade-long struggle to adoption, and included it in his epitaph (along with the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the University of Virginia). The Statute's history reflects two key revolutionary principles: absolute freedom of religious conscience; and the separation of church and state. Both principles remain lively topics of debate on the contemporary religious and political scene. Papers collected here were presented at a conference sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy. This volume collects the proceedings from a conference on the evolution and practice of central banking sponsored by the Central Bank Institute of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. The articles and discussants' comments in this volume largely focus on two questions: the need for central banks, and how to maintain price stability once they are established. Alan Baker's 60th birthday in August 1999 offered an ideal opportunity to organize a conference at ETH Zurich with the goal of presenting the state of the art in number theory and geometry. British Policy and European Reconstruction after the First World War is a study of the political economy of Europe after 1919. Dr Orde provides a comprehensive overview of all aspects of reconstruction: financial stabilization, credit, trade and development. She shows how policies were much affected by the connected problems of reparations and war debts. In all this, Britain, as a major trading nation and financial centre, weakened by the war but less physically damaged than many belligerents, played a crucial role which has not hitherto received comprehensive treatment. Many advances in research and development have been made since the first MRS symposium on high-temperature ordered intermetallic alloys was held in 1984. That conference demonstrated a resurgence of interest in potential uses of intermetallic alloys for structural applications. Blossoming research in the field brings us to this book which has focused specifically on processing and microstructural control, alloy design, mechanical properties and industrial applications. Examples of structural applications of the 'mature' intermetallics, TiAl and Ni3Al are also featured. Evidence also suggests that high-melting-temperature refractory or platinum group metal-based intermetallics, still in the 'exotic' category, may yet represent the best potential for a breakthrough in high-temperature performance. This book examines some fifty countries to ascertain how the chambers of bicameral legislatures interact when they produce legislation. An understanding of this interaction is essential because otherwise legislative behaviour in each chamber may be unintelligible or incorrectly interpreted. The book employs cooperative game theoretic models to establish that bicameral legislatures, when compared with unicameral legislatures, increase the stability of the status quo and reduce intercameral differences to one privileged dimension of conflict. Non-cooperative game theoretic models are used to investigate the significance of a series of insitutional devices used to resolve intercameral conflict where a bill is introduced, which chamber has the final word, how many times a bill can shuttle between chambers, and whether conference committees are called. Empirical evidence, mainly from the French Republic, is used to evaluate the arguments.

Researchers have begun to apply economic techniques initially developed to analyse the industrialised countries to analyse North-South interactions in the world economy. This volume, derived from a CEPR conference, brings together theoretical and empirical papers on fiscal, monetary and trade linkages between the North and South. Ergodic theory is a field that is stimulating on its own, and also in its interactions with other branches of mathematics and science. In recent years, the interchanges with harmonic analysis have been especially noticeable and productive. During the decade preceding publication there were a number of significant developments in financial economics and major contributions made both by individuals who could be classified as conventional financial economists and by others who do not fit easily into this category - theoretical microeconomists, public and industrial economists. This volume contains a selection from the papers presented at a conference in Oxford in September 1985 which aimed to bring together a number of the leading participants in this field. The papers in this book examine this question, focusing on particular crises, notably those of 1836, 1873, 1920 and 1929. This book takes a different approach to that scholarship: it views doctrine as a socio-linguistic practice. In other words, this book views legal scholars not as law-appliers, but as constructing knowledge within a particular academic discipline. Therefore, more and more non-profit organizations are involved in this field.
