This 1997 book is about those animals found on the sea floor that live by filtering microscopic particles carried to them by water currents. Its purpose is to review what is known about the biology of suspension feeders in relation to their flow environment. The book includes the larval biology, physiology, ethology and ecology of suspension feeders interacting with water flow. It will be of value to marine scientists beginning research in the interdisciplinary field of hydrodynamics and benthic biology, and it is the first attempt to provide a comprehensive overview of this synthesis from the biological viewpoint.

James Silk Buckingham (1786–1855) was a writer who travelled extensively and published accounts of his adventures in places such as India, Persia, Egypt, and Palestine. He first went to sea as a boy, and spent a period as a Spanish prisoner-of-war. He was expelled from India in 1823 for criticising the East India Company and the Bengal government. Back in London, he was a supporter of political, social and military reform, and served as the first MP for Sheffield, from 1832 to 1837. He founded several journals, including The Athenaeum, a weekly London periodical. On retiring from Parliament, he left for North America, where he spent nearly four years, and was highly critical of America's economic dependence on slavery. This autobiography, which remained incomplete at his death, was published in 1855, and shows the range of his interests, his energy, and his desire for social and political reform.

On 27 August 1883, the island of Krakatau was destroyed in one of the most violent volcanic events ever recorded. This caused the 'year without a summer', thousands of deaths (mainly from tsunamis), fabulous sunsets and a measurable cooling of the oceans over nearly a century. Krakatau also provided evolutionary biologists with a unique opportunity to investigate the mechanisms of plant dispersal. This had been the subject of laborious research for Charles Darwin, who had speculated upon and, it seems, accurately postulated how an 'unstocked island' might be recolonised. In this 1908 volume, Alfred Ernst analysed the effects of wind, birds and sea currents in the transport not only of seeds but also of trees, branches and even of substantial animals. Krakatau's ecosystem, at a more primitive stage than that Darwin had seen on the Galapagos Islands, demonstrated how simple but continuous natural forces might re-establish a complex ecology.

莎士比亞(1564 － 1616) 算是世界公認的最偉大作家之一，著有歌劇三十九首及十四行詩154 篇。莎翁十四行詩大概是創作於1590 年至1598 年之間，1609 年在倫敦首次出版。十四行詩（Sonnet），原始字意是小歌謠、小曲詩的意思。於十三世紀起源於義大利，之後傳布到歐洲各國。是一種定型的詩類，中國新文學運動時曾音譯為「商籟」。 全詩由十四句詩句組成，每行十個音節。通常其押韻結構有特別嚴格的限制。一般英國十四行詩, 分為三段，每四行為一段，每段都有一個小主題，再加上類似總結的最後兩句。每段的韻尾是"a-b-a-b, c-d-c-d, e-f-e-f, g-g"， 或者"a-b-a-b, b-c-b-c, c-d-c-d, e-e"。很像中文詩裡的五言律詩或七言律詩注重對偶和平仄之韻。中文詩較短，大多只有四句或八句。在韻律上， 只要求偶句押韻，一韻到底，不能換韻。在中文翻譯中，ㄤㄢ，ㄥㄣ，ㄜㄛ等韻母，ㄕㄙ，彳ㄘ，ㄓㄗ等聲母視為同韻；而且在中文翻譯上，每段韻尾上可以是 aabb,cdcd,eeee,ff 或 aaaa,aaaa,bbbb,cc 的變化韻型。莎翁在文字用法及文法上的運用常有創新之舉，除了許多古典用法，還有大量的俚語，世俗用語。所幸，在英文參考文獻上都可以找到注解。莎翁最擅長的手法是在最後兩句話，引出警世之語，或點出双關或矛盾的論述。往往翻譯到最後的兩句話，才警覺到（還須要回溯）前段的翻譯之句，可能有未完備之處。 為了在莎翁逝世四佰週年紀念，湊上一個自拍之景，就匆匆地發表成冊，也算是紀念自己的勇氣與傻勁，為自己鼓掌拍個手。順便夾帶些自己創作的小圖，紀念 莎士比亞逝世四佰週年。

Through a set of case studies, it describes how the region's decision-makers allowed these changes to grow into an environmental and societal nightmare. It outlines many lessons to be learned for other areas undergoing detrimental creeping environmental change, and provides an important example of how to approach such disasters for students and researchers of environmental studies, global change, political science and history.
