Originally published in 1908, as part of the Cambridge English Classics series, this volume of Samuel Butler's writings falls into two parts: the first part was derived from Thyer's edition of The Genuine Remains in Verse and Prose of Mr Samuel Butler; the second part contains previously unpublished material taken from the Butler Manuscripts in the British Library. The text is made up of a series of character sketches and essays on various subjects. An appendix of unclassified observations and an editorial notes section are also included. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the works of Butler, the development of satire and seventeenth-century literature in general.

In Erewhon, an anagram for "nowhere," sickness is a punishable crime, criminals receive compassionate medical treatment, and machines are banned, lest they evolve and take over. Originally published in 1872, the proto-steampunk novelErewhon won its author immediate recognition as a satirist. SamuelButler followed in the tradition of Voltaire and Swift in creatingErewhon and Erewhon Revisited, which are widely recognized as the nineteenth century's most important works of their kind.Entertaining and provocative, these books are unsparing in their treatment of the hypocrisies of Victorian society, taking aim at the family, church, and mechanical "progress." George Orwell, no stranger to the depiction of futuristic societies, noted that at the time of Erewhon's writing the author needed "imagination of a very high order to see that machinery could be dangerous as well as useful." Aeschylus' Tragedies are here presented in the original Greek, with Latin translations, notes, scholia, and readings assembled by one of the eminent classical scholars of the nineteenth century, Samuel Butler (1774–1839). Based upon the monumental seventeenth-century commentary edition by Thomas Stanley, and drawing upon scholarship published in the intervening century, Butler's four volumes of the complete plays represent an important synthesis of early critical responses to Aeschylus. The history of Greek scholarship in England – from the labours of one its first and most influential interpreters, Stanley, to the efforts of one of its most respected teachers, Butler – is amply demonstrated in this set of works. The second volume (1811) contains Seven Against Thebes and Agamemnon in Greek, with Stanley's Latin translation and notes. Headmaster of Shrewsbury School and later bishop of Lichfield, Butler is central to histories of classical scholarship and education in England.

To celebrate its 150th anniversary, a bold new edition of the utopian/dystopian classic that gave Erewhon its name. This new edition of the Samuel Butler classic, first published in 1872, arrives in honor of its 150th anniversary, and features an updated package and new context for the book from one of today’s great thinkers in science fiction, Annalee Newitz.Setting out to make his fortune in a far-off country, a young traveller discovers the remote and beautiful land of Erewhon and is given a home among its extraordinarily handsome citizens. But their visitor soon discovers that this seemingly ideal community has its faults―here crime is treated indulgently as a malady to be cured, while illness, poverty and misfortune are cruelly punished, and all machines have been superstitiously destroyed after a bizarre prophecy. Can he survive in a world where morality is turned upside down? Inspired by Samuel Butler's years in colonial New Zealand and by his reading of Darwin's Origin of Specie
