Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841–1904) was a journalist and explorer renowned for his adventures in Africa. After emigrating to America in 1859, Stanley worked as a journalist for the New York Herald. In 1869 he was instructed to undertake an expedition to find the missionary David Livingstone, and the success of this mission brought him public recognition and financial success. Published in 1895, these two volumes contain Stanley's early journalistic writing as special correspondent for the Herald and the Missouri Democrat. Volume 2 begins in 1869, when Stanley was sent to report on the inauguration of the Suez Canal, to write a guide to the Nile and to give an account of Sir Charles Warren's explorations underneath Jerusalem, before proceeding through Persia to India. Displaying his characteristic energy, versatility and direct writing style throughout, Stanley portrays, in the words of his publisher, 'life-like pictures of times gone by'.

The consumption of books is closely intertwined with the material conditions of their production. The Tudor period saw both revolutionary progress in printing technology and the survival of traditional forms of communication from the manuscript era. In the twelfth century, curia regis was the name given to the assembly, whether in England, France or the kingdoms of Spain, which helped the monarch to govern. In its largest form, such an assembly consisted of members of the royal family, royal household officials and the lay and ecclesiastical magnates of the kingdom. This book analyses the composition and function of these solemn assemblies in León and Castile, two kingdoms which were united under one monarch from 1072 until 1157 and again after 1230. The author traces the development of a representative assembly in León-Castile, from the time when people from the towns were first summoned to attend the meetings until 1295. She has culled information from the surviving records of the religious and military recipients of royal charters and from the legal records of the cortes. The scrutiny of this material provides an invaluable contribution to the history of representative assemblies in Western Europe during the Middle Ages.

The work of Samuel Palmer (1805–1881) received mixed critical success during his lifetime, and his later life was overshadowed by the death of his elder son. Largely forgotten after his own death in 1881, Palmer began to attract renewed interest in the mid-twentieth century and he is now recognised as a key figure in English Romanticism. First published in 1892, this combination of a biography and a collection of Samuel Palmer's letters was written and compiled by his surviving son, A. H. Palmer, who later, in 1909, burned large quantities of his father's sketchbooks and notebooks. The letters published here, which date from 1829 to 1881, include correspondence with other members of 'the Ancients', such as John Linnell, George Richmond and Edward Calvert. The book also includes a range of sketches and etchings, as well as a catalogue of exhibited works.

For many years the domain of specialists in early Latin, in complex metres, and in the reconstruction of texts, Roman comedy is now established in the mainstream of Classical literary criticism.
