長達四十年，柯南．道爾爵士陸續寫下了這些也許他自己並不看重的文字。一百多年以來，數不清的讀者因為各自的理由，喜歡上了他筆下的這位神探，喜歡上了神探的醫生朋友，喜歡上了維多利亞時代倫敦的昏暗街燈，喜歡上了風光旖旎的英格蘭原野，喜歡上了各位蠢笨低能的探員，甚至喜歡上了神探的頭號敵人、智力與他一時瑜亮的莫里亞蒂教授。更有一些讀者對神探的演繹法如醉如癡，不遺餘力地四處尋覓他和他的朋友在現實中留下的蛛絲馬跡，以至於最終斷定，他和他的朋友實有其人。神探的身影在各式各樣的舞台劇、電視劇和電影當中反復出現，又在萬千讀者的記憶當中反復縈迴。我們真的應該感謝柯南．道爾爵士，感謝他不情不願抑或半推半就地寫下了這樣六十個故事，為我們的好奇心提供了一座興味無窮的寶山。六十個福爾摩斯故事，如同一幅七色斑斕的長卷，我們可以從中窺見另一個民族在另一個時空的生活，窺見一個等級森嚴卻不乏脈脈溫情的社會，窺見一個馬車與潛艇並存的過渡年代，窺見一個又一個雖欠豐滿立體卻不乏神采風姿的人，窺見一鱗半爪，商品化程度較低的人性。《福爾摩斯全集》譯註本全七卷，譯註者李家真前後耗時二十載翻譯，初版面世後又重新校訂潤飾，為的是不負作者雕龍文心，以酬讀者知音雅意。此帙成書已久，原文文本大致定型，慮或有脫漏異文，故採Random House、Oxford University Press、Wings Books等出版社等多家版本參照校譯。不較日居月諸，但期博覽遐觀，以求精審，以避訛誤。此譯與前賢譯本多有不同，非欲立異標新，實因原作文字所限，不得不然。為盡一己所知所能，如實反映作品原貌及時代特徵。書中一千五百餘條註釋，用意無非簡略說明相關歷史及文化背景，為讀者省卻翻檢參考書籍之勞。柯南．道爾爵士志趣宏遠，不以此著自矜，書中敘述遂屢有明顯謬誤，甚或自相矛盾。此類牴牾凡有發現，譯者亦盡己之力一一註明，其餘揣測懸想之偵探趣味，則留待讀者諸君自行發掘。（參見隨書附贈的百頁圖文彩色專冊《誰識福爾摩斯》）
