社會科學作為科學的一部分，其研究必須建立在一定的本體論與認識論基礎之上（尤其是本體論），而自笛卡爾到波普爾以來的科學哲學傳統，幾乎都不太觸及 “本體論”。因此，巴斯卡提出了一個顯然比波普爾的“劃界問題”更加根本的問題：是什麼（樣的本體存在）才使得科學活動成為可能？《科學的實在主義理論》一書則試圖回答這個問題。巴斯卡認為，世界應該被劃分成三個領域，即真實領域（Domain of Real）、事實領域（Domain of Actual）和經驗領域（Domain of Empirical），這三個領域依次真包含，即真實領域包含事實領域、事實領域包含經驗領域。三個領域對應的是世界運行的機制（mechanism）、事物（event）和經驗（experience）。人類的經驗生活存在於經驗領域；通過人類的想像和思考，事物能夠為人類所認識；但無論如何，人類無法利用自身的理念來直接觸及世界運行的機制。世界運行的機制在事實領域和經驗領域中始終存在著，人類的科學活動正是在事實領域和經驗領域中探索，因而能夠感知到機制的存在；但另一方面，由於機制存在於人類無法直接觸及的真實領域，因此窮盡對機制的探索是不可能的。只有在本體論上絕對主義的前提下強調認識論的相對主義，才能夠使得科學能夠在開放體系下踏實地在往真理的大道上前行。只有在科學實在主義的本體論前提下，才能在“科學發現的邏輯”引領下，制定出真正的“科學研究的綱領”。巴斯卡將科學哲學在本體論的意義上向前大大推進了一步。
