Academic attention has focused on America's influence on European stage works, and yet dozens of operettas from Austria and Germany were produced on Broadway and in the West End, and their impact on the musical life of the early twentieth century is undeniable. In this ground breaking book, Derek B. Scott examines the cultural transfer of operetta from the German stage to Britain and the USA and offers a historical and critical survey of these operettas and their music. In the period 1900–1940, over sixty operettas were produced in the West End, and over seventy on Broadway. British palaeontologist Thomas Davidson (1817–85) was born in Edinburgh and began his studies at the city's university. Encouraged by German palaeontologist Leopold von Buch, he began to study brachiopod fossils at the age of twenty, and he quickly became the undisputed authority. He was elected fellow of the Geological Society of London in 1852, receiving the Wollaston medal in 1865. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1857. Published between 1850 and 1886, this six-volume work became the definitive reference text on the subject. It includes more than two hundred hand-drawn plates and a comprehensive bibliography. This volume, the first of six, includes an essay on the terebratulids by Richard Owen, an analysis of brachiopod shell structure by W. B. Carpenter and a guide to classification by Davidson himself. The rest of the volume describes Cretaceous, Tertiary, Oolitic and Liasic brachiopod species.

The modernist avant-garde used manifestos to outline their ideas, cultural programs and political agendas. Yet the manifesto, as a document of revolutionary change and a formative genre of modernism, has heretofore received little critical attention. This 2007 study reappraises the central role of manifestos in shaping the modernist movement by investigating twentieth-century manifestos from Europe and the Black Atlantic. Manifestos by writers from the imperial metropolis and the colonial 'periphery' drew very different emphases in their recasting of histories and experiences of modernity. W. B. Grove's British Rust Funghi, first published by Cambridge University Press in 1913, had long been the standard work on the subject. But it had grown increasingly obsolete in the light of the intensive research devoted to the group. As early as 1938, Dr Wilson, who was reader in Mycology at Edinburg University, was encouraged to prepare a new edition. Since then it became clear that what was needed was not a revision but an entirely new book. This was three-quarters complete in 1960, when Dr Wilson's illness and death again brought it to a halt. His colleague Dr Douglas Henderson then undertook full responsibility, completing the text and redrawing all the figures. This book was published in 1966 and is now being reissued. It covers all the species of Uredinales or Rust Fungi known in Britain at the time of publication and takes into account extensive research.

This work of 1868 is a revised and expanded version of a series of articles contributed by G. B. Malleson (1825–1898) to the Calcutta Review. The author served in India for thirty years from 1847, retiring finally with the honorary rank of major-general. Drawing on his wealth of first-hand experience of Anglo-Indian military history, he wrote prolifically and with an accessible, vigorous style. This work on the history of the French in India from 1674 to 1761 reassesses the career and contribution of Joseph François Dupleix and other major figures in this period of the Franco-Indian empire. He sees the decline in French power as the result of a few extremely able persons being let down by their mother-country's lack of support. In this he contrasts the French with the English in terms of their Indian colonial history.

R. B. Cunninghame Graham (1852–1936) was one of the most brilliant and mercurial characters of his day. Known as 'Don Roberto' and 'the Modern Don Quixote' because of his Spanish blood and impetuous life-style, and as 'the Uncrowned King of Scotland' because of his descent from King Robert II, he was a paradoxical man whose career was astonishingly varied. After an early period as an adventurer, when he worked as a cattle-rancher and horse-dealer in South America and Texas, he embarked on a stormy political career. He was the first socialist in Parliament, was gaoled after assailing the police at the Battle of Trafalgar Square on Bloody Sunday, 1887, later became the founder and president of the first Labour Party, and was eventually elected president of the Scottish National Party. Meanwhile he travelled in Morocco disguised as an Arab sheik and prospected for gold in Spain.
