This new edition of Introduction to Lattices and Order presents a radical reorganization and updating, though its primary aim is unchanged. The explosive development of theoretical computer science in recent years has, in particular, influenced the book's evolution: a fresh treatment of fixpoints testifies to this and Galois connections now feature prominently. An early presentation of concept analysis gives both a concrete foundation for the subsequent theory of complete lattices and a glimpse of a methodology for data analysis that is of commercial value in social science. Classroom experience has led to numerous pedagogical improvements and many new exercises have been added. As before, exposure to elementary abstract algebra and the notation of set theory are the only prerequisites, making the book suitable for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. It will also be a valuable resource for anyone who meets ordered structures.

This unique book presents an overview of isostasy, a simple concept of fundamental importance to the Earth Sciences that students have traditionally found difficult to grasp. With this in mind, the author has used a simplified mathematical treatment, numerous geological examples and an extensive bibliography, to make the subject more accessible and easy-to-understand. Beginning by tracing the ideas behind local and regional models of isostasy and arguing that only flexure is in accord with geological observations, the book proceeds to describe the theoretical background, the observational evidence and the constraints that flexure has provided on physical properties of the lithosphere. The book concludes with a discussion of flexure's role in understanding the evolution of the surface features of the Earth and its neighboring planets. Ideal for graduate students of geophysics, geodesy and geoscience, it will also be of interest to researchers in gravity and geodesy, tectonics and basin

This book is an exploration of the process and consequences of the campaigns of Alexander the Great of Macedon (who reigned from 336 to 323 BC), focusing on the effect of his monarchy upon the world of his day. A detailed running narrative of the actual campaigns from the Danube to the Indus is complemented and enlarged upon by thematic studies on the reaction in Greece to Macedonian suzerainty, the administration of the empire, the evolution of the Macedonian army and its role as the instrument of conquest, and on the origins of the ruler cult.

The supply of energy and raw materials has become an increasingly important topic of public debate. This book is an introduction to the energy and resources systems that influence all of our lives. The authors analyse as a system the role of energy usage in the human environment and discuss the political and economic structure involved. Mineral resources are analysed in terms of international and national systems including a section on the technologies of extraction and production. By considering the historical, political, and economic factors that determine these systems, the authors are able to discuss possible future prospects and solutions to the problem of supply.

This book is concerned with the response of systems in equilibrium to perturbing forces, and the general theory underlying their behaviour. When a system is in equilibrium it can remain motionless indefinitely, until it is disturbed. Then it may sink back to its original state, or vibrate about the position of rest, or fall over. Also, if the conditions governing the system are slowly changed, the system will adjust itself to the alteration in a smooth fashion, except at critical points, where a tiny change of conditions may lead to a major alteration. Important modern topics to which the author gives serious attention are: elementary catastrophe theory; bifurcation and chaos in the response of driven systems; and phase changes, especially critical points and X-transitions. It is Professor Pippard's belief that all practising physicists and engineers should be aware of the disconcerting possibility of real systems to behave unpredictably and this book is intended to encourage the sprea

This 1985 book comprises the papers presented at the symposium of the Internation Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Sheffield April 1984, held in memory of the late J. D. Eshelby FRS, Professor of the Theory of Materials at the University of Sheffield. The papers reflect the range of Professor Eshelby's interests. Topics include conservation laws and their applications; inclusions, inhomogeneities and composites; short cracks; the dynamics of dislocations and cracks; dislocations and point defects; and creep fracture. There is also an obituary of Professor Eshelby, together with a complete list of his publications. The 45 papers in this volume provide an international survey of work in the field of deformation and fracture, with theoretical examinations, reports of empirical investigations and descriptions of experimental techniques. It will be of interest to professionals and researchers in the science of materials, mechanics of solids and mechanical engineering and to relat

The laws of thermodynamics are amongst the most assured and wide-ranging of all scientific laws. They do not pretend to explain any observation in molecular terms but, by showing the necessary relationships between different physical properties, they reduce otherwise disconnected results to compact order, and predict new effects. This classic title, first published in 1957, is a systematic exposition of principles, with examples of applications, especially to changes of places and the conditions for stability. In all this entropy is a key concept.
