摘自〈第一章：邊界與敗北〉2019年發生在香港並延續迄今的抗議運動—即「反對逃犯條例修訂運動」（anti-ELAB movement；下文簡稱「反修例運動」或「反送中運動」）在國際上的激辯中，因其國際地緣政治與左翼反帝國主義立場的意義而成為焦點。雖然眾說紛紜，可是評論者幾乎清一色預設了同樣明確的地理單位作為依據。換言之，就政治構成（political composition）的面向而言，這場辯論無論是以中文、英文或法文呈現，基本上都以既有的國際邊界為框架。根據此框架，對香港的描述一直延續著一個半世紀以來的慣例，將香港定義為一個前哨、一個文明間的互動區、一個夾縫生存、中西合璧的地方。正因如此，這場運動的關鍵，也就是劃界的行為，要麼被完全忽視，要麼被納入其他諸如身分認同、主權、自由等議題而被分散和遮蓋。相對於一些評論者將香港看成是個對抗諸如集權主義、監控式資本主義或數位獨裁等強權形式的全球性鬥爭的前線，本書欲闡明：香港確乎是一道「前線」，但卻是在完全不同的意義上：其成為「前線」的原因，正是因為劃界實踐(bordering practices)早已構成了當下全球政治局勢的核心。本書主張，這種牽涉邊界的生命政治，並非只出現在香港，而是當前全球規模最大且最為普遍的挑戰。在經濟國族主義逐漸成為世界各地政治主流的當下，回歸邊界的意志對於本來深受邊界烙印的人文學知識的影響，十分難測，但是似乎注定讓人文學的解殖任務加倍困難。
