In Painting Architecture: Jiehua in Yuan China, 1271–1368, Leqi Yu has conducted comprehensive research on jiehua or ruled-line painting, a unique painting genre in fourteenth-century China. This genre relies on tools such as rulers to represent architectural details and structures accurately. Such technical consideration and mechanical perfection linked this painting category with the builder’s art, which led to Chinese elites’ belittlement and won Mongol patrons’ admiration. Yu suggests that painters in the Yuan dynasty made new efforts towards a unique modular system and an unsurpassable plain-drawing tradition. She argues that these two strategies made architectural paintings in the Yuan dynasty entirely different from their predecessors, as well as making the art form extremely difficult for subsequent painters to imitate.

The people of this remote and traditional corner of the Ching empire were not consulted about the annexation, initially resisted and long resented it. From the academic perspective, Southern Min is one of the Chinese Language families, a dialect. Specifically, Taiwanese Southern Min(TSM) has resulted from a mixture of Formosan languages, Dutch, Japanese and Mandarin by way of language contact. It has preserved the basic structure, but is quite different from the Southern Min spoken in Mainland China. TSM is the natural result of a mixture of different accents. In The Chinese Idea of a University: Phoenix Reborn, Rui Yang conceptualizes the cultural foundations of modern university development in Chinese societies. Instead of focusing on the uniqueness of the societies, this book aims to prove that one educational purpose could be fulfilled via many paths, and that most of the characteristics the university could be found in other institutions of higher learning. Citing the practices of four selected Chinese societies, Yang opposes the existence of an impassable chasm between Chinese and Western ideas of a university and argues that it is possible to combine Chinese and Western ideas of a university. Also, this book is one of the first in English to theorize the Chinese idea of a university. It links the historical events to the present, in a context of an enormous impact of Western academic models and institutions, from the beginning of modern universities in Chinese societies to the contemporary period.

After his graduation, he was an English teacher at Nantou Senior High and later, teaching assistant at NCKU. He earned his Master’ degree from the University of Oregon in 1971 and taught English at the Taipei College of Business for two years. In 1978, he was conferred Doctor of Education from Southern Illiois University. Having returned to NCKU in 1979, he taught as associate professor and later as professor. Afterwards, he was appointed Head of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Dean of Discipline, Dean of Students, and Head of Graduate Institute of Education. After his retirement from NCKU in 1999, he was invited to start his second career at the Leader College of Management, a privately-funded institution of higher learning in Tainan. Through images and text, this scroll documents the ordination of Empress Zhang (1470–1541), wife of the Ming-dynasty Hongzhi emperor (r. 1488–1505) by a Heavenly Master of Zhengyi Daoism. It is a key source in the study of the history of Daoist ordinations, and a rare surviving record of the relationship between a Ming empress and the Heavenly Masters. Through detailed analysis of different historical perspectives and the Ordination Scroll itself, this book offers new insights into Daoist practices, Daoist material and visual culture, and the lives of imperial women in Ming China.
