Comparative-Historical Methods

John Horace Round (1854–1928) published Feudal England in 1895. The volume is a collection of Round's articles on feudalism, most of which had been previously published in the English Historical Review. The essays cover the period 1050–1200. They are linked by Round's overarching argument that it was the Norman Conquest that transplanted feudalism to England and that during the Anglo-Saxon period England had no real feudal institutions. The volume includes Round's groundbreaking article 'The Introduction of Knight Service into England', first published in the English Historical Review for 1891–1892; a number of his important essays on the Domesday Book, a topic on which he was long regarded as the leading expert; and several essays challenging the historical methods of Professor Freeman, the main opponent of Round's ideas. T. M. Lemos traces changes in the marriage customs of ancient Palestine over the course of several hundred years. The most important of these changes was a shift in emphasis from bridewealth to dowry, the latter of which clearly predominated in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Frederick Henry Scrivener (1813–1891) was a pioneer of New Testament textual criticism. His transcription of the Codex Augiensis – a ninth-century Greek and Latin manuscript of St Paul's Epistles which had been part of the famous Benedictine library at Reichenau - was published in 1859 and is a document of considerable historical significance in biblical research. It presents 'as true an image as possible' of the ninth-century text. The volume also includes a 'full and exact' collation of fifty manuscripts of the Gospels. In his Critical Introduction, Scrivener provides a detailed account of the manuscripts he has collated, setting the context for the reader. Hermann Alfred Hirt (1865–1936) taught Greek, Latin and early Germanic languages at Leipzig University from 1892 to 1912 before moving to the chair of Sanskrit and comparative linguistics at Giessen. Born around the time when Bopp and Schleicher were publishing their ground-breaking work on Indo-European, and a young man when Brugmann published his monumental comparative grammar (all available in this series), Hirt began this seven-volume grammar in the 1920s soon after the exciting discovery of Tocharian and the decipherment of Hittite.
