Samuel Hartlib was a key figure in the intellectual revolution of the seventeenth century. Originally from Elbing, in Prussig, Hartlib settled permanently in England from the late 1620s until his death in 1662. His aspirations formed a distinctive and influential strand in English intellectual life during those revolutionary decades. This volume reflects the variety of the theoretical and practical interests of Hartlib's circle and presents them in their continental context. The editors of the volume are all attached to the Hartlib Papers Project at the University of Sheffield, a major collaborative research effort to exploit the largely untapped resources of the surviving Hartlib manuscripts. In an introduction to the volume they explore the background to the Hartlib circle and provide the context in which the essays should be read.

This 1998 book is both an introduction to, and a survey of, some topics of singularity theory; in particular the studying of singularities by means of differential forms. Here some ideas and notions that arose in global algebraic geometry, namely mixed Hodge structures and the theory of period maps, are developed in the local situation to study the case of isolated singularities of holomorphic functions. The author introduces the Gauss–Manin connection on the vanishing cohomology of a singularity, that is on the cohomology fibration associated to the Milnor fibration, and draws on the work of Brieskorn and Steenbrink to calculate this connection, and the limit mixed Hodge structure. This book provides an introduction to metaphysics. At the outset Professor Hamlyn distinguishes two conceptions of metaphysics running through the history of the subject. One, which goes back to Aristotle, is concerned with ontology, and with what has to exist for beings such as we are; the other separates appearance and reality and attempts to establish what really exists. Professor Hamlyn's account of metaphysics conforms with the first tradition. This is not, however, primarily a historical exposition. The discussion concentrates on central metaphysical concepts and problems, including the principles of ontology, substance, particulars and universals, monism and pluralism, space and time, minds, selves and personal identity. Throughout, Professor Hamlyn's thoroughly informed and argued consideration of the topics presents both a persuasive view of the subject and an excellent grounding in it.

After an introduction outlining the chemical and physical characteristics of the environment, the book goes on to look at the actual habitats in which algae occur. The communities of the individual habitats such as open water, sediments, rocky shores, coral reefs, hot springs, sea ice, soil, etc., are then discussed with special phenomena highlighted, for example rhythmic activity, nitrogen fixation and buoyancy. This book is an introduction to the esthetics of music. Aesthetics, which were of prime importance in thinking about music in the nineteenth century, are today sometimes suspected of being idle speculation. Yet judgments about music and every sort of musical activity are based on aesthetic presuppositions. Carl Dahlhaus gives an account of developments in the aesthetics of music from the mid-eighteenth century onwards. He combines a historical and systematic approach. Central themes in music are grouped together to illustrate both the historical course of events and a systematic unity of the essential elements in the aesthetics of music. For this edition, the late Carl Dahlhaus provided an annotated bibliography. William Austin has added books for the English-speaking reader, and has also supplied notes to the text to help the student.

This account is a study of twofold symmetry in algebraic topology. The author discusses specifically the antipodal involution of a real vector bundle - multiplication by - I in each fibre; doubling and squaring operations; the symmetry of bilinear forms and Hermitian K-theory. In spite of its title, this is not a treatise on equivariant topology; rather it is the language in which to describe the symmetry. Familiarity with the basic concepts of algebraic topology (homotopy, stable homotopy, homology, K-theory, the Pontrjagin―Thom transfer construction) is assumed. Detailed proofs are not given (the expert reader will be able to supply them when necessary) yet nowhere is credibility lost. Thus the approach is elementary enough to provide an introduction to the subject suitable for graduate students although research workers will find here much of interest.

Alfred Robb (1873–1936) was a British physicist who worked extensively in the area of special relativity. Published in 1905, this book by A. S. Wilkins was intended to provide an introduction to the history of the ancient Roman system of education. It begins from a purely national stage, considering the basis of education in the early Roman Republic, before tracing the historical influence of the flood of Greek culture which poured into Rome from the middle of the third century BC and lasted well into the age of the Empire. Elementary and higher education are examined in respective chapters, and the subject of state endowment is also considered. Wilkins quotes freely from original sources without always providing English translations, so some knowledge of Latin is expected.

This is an introduction to the ancient genre of epigram, short poems literally written or inscribed 'on' an object or figuratively 'on' a topic. The authors set out what epigram means and why it matters, exploring its roots in inscriptions on stone and its literary flourishing in the Hellenistic world after Alexander. They trace its migration from Greece to Rome, where its most famous exponent was Martial, and consider the continuation of Greek epigram under the Roman empire in the so-called 'Second Sophistic'. The final chapter shows how Greek epigram achieved new importance in the nineteenth century as raw material for stories about the classical past.

This 1971 book reviews and criticises the widely accepted hypothesis that the decline of the inland bill of exchange in Britain in the nineteenth century was largely due to the process of bank amalgamation, which linked bank branches in areas of excess demand for money with branches having surplus funds. Dr Nishimura argues that the introduction of the telegraph and steamship in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, by making both supply and demand more certain, relieved the merchant of the necessity to hold large stocks of goods in anticipation of orders. This book will be useful for other researchers in this field.

A. S. Ramsey (1867–1954) was a distinguished Cambridge mathematician and President of Magdalene College. He wrote several textbooks 'for the use of higher divisions in schools and for first year students at university'. This book on statics, published in 1934, was intended as a companion volume to his Dynamics of 1929 and like the latter was based upon his lectures to students of the mathematical tripos, but it assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, provides an introduction and offers more that 100 example problems with their solutions. Topics include vectors, forces acting at a point, moments, friction, centres of gravity, work and energy, and elasticity.

Victor Hugo (1802–1885) is best known as the author of the novel Les Miserables, but he also wrote several plays, of which Les Burgraves (1843) was the last; it was in fact the failure of this play at the box office that caused Hugo to abandon drama in favour of fiction. The play, a melodrama set in medieval Germany, is now widely regarded as marking the beginning of the end of Romantic theatre on mainland Europe. This edition, which reproduces the French text along with an introduction and notes in English, was first published in 1904. Cambridge University Press is delighted to bring this classic edition back into print.

The book is an introduction to some of the 1967–1974 results and techniques in classical lattice statistical mechanics. It is written in the language of probability theory rather than that of physics, and is thus aimed primarily at mathematicians who might have little or no background in physics.
