What is the nature of dialectic according to Hegel? And what is achieved by its means? These are the main questions that John McTaggart (1866–1925) seeks to answer in this work, first published in 1896. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Cambridge-educated philosopher and fellow of Trinity College enjoyed a prominent position within the circle of idealist philosophers, and was regarded as one of England's leading Hegel scholars. Although a proponent of the German philosopher's dialectical thinking in general, McTaggart was not uncritical of Hegel's philosophy and objected to his application of abstract thought. A fusion system over a p-group S is a category whose objects form the set of all subgroups of S, whose morphisms are certain injective group homomorphisms, and which satisfies axioms first formulated by Puig that are modelled on conjugacy relations in finite groups. The dictionary definition of tradition refers to beliefs and practices that have been transmitted from generation to generation, however, 'tradition' can rest simply on the claim that certain cultural elements are rooted in the past. Johann Nepomuk Nestroy (1801–1862), for a quarter of a century the dominant actor on the popular Viennese stage, was the author of over eighty dramatic works, all but one of them comedies in the local Viennese tradition. Bishop Heber's Journal was first published in 1828, edited by his wife from material in the form of notes and letters which he wrote to her during his tour. It is from the first edition that the passages in this 1971 edition have been taken. Dr. Laird provides an introduction and explanatory notes to the text. Reginald Heber became Bishop of Calcutta in 1823, by which time Protestant missionary activity in India was well under way. His diocese included all of the East India Company's territories together with Ceylon and Australia. This edition contains selections from Heber's account of his stay in Calcutta in 1823–24 and of his subsequent journey across northern India to Bombay. The journal is marked by a sympathetic understanding of and interest in India and its peoples to a degree by no means always to be found in British writers of this time.

Although the topic of humour has been dealt with for other eras, early medieval humour remains largely neglected. These essays go some way towards filling the gap, examining how early medieval writers deliberately employed humour to make their cases. The essays range from the late Roman empire through to the tenth century, and from Byzantium to Anglo-Saxon England.
