This little volume was first published in the series of Cambridge Manuals of Science and Literature in 1913. This 1953 reissue was lightly revised and put in a new format by Anthony Wagner, Richmond Herald. One new block and a glossary of terms were added, and the last chapter of suggested further reading was rewritten. The scantness of the revision required is testament to its quality as an introduction to a subject others had made obscure. It begins with the definition and origin of heraldry, then explains the terms and devices - the grammar of heraldry - and shows how individuals and families marshalled and differenced their arms. There are two chapters on lozenges, roundels and banners of arms, and crests, badges, punning arms and supporters. There follows a chronological account of the growth and decay of heraldry in England. In a concluding chapter the whole question of nomenclature is treated with good sense.

The Ai Chiang-nan fu by the sixth-century poet Yu Hsin is one of the most famous and difficult of all Chinese medieval poems. It relates in a highly allegorical and elliptical manner the fall of the Liang dynasty, which the poet served. The poem belongs to the genre of the fu; rhapsodical, elegiac works written in an irregular metre. It is, however not at all typical of the genre, which is more often associated with descriptions of hunting parks, sacrifices, plants and birds. The poem thus deserves study both for its literary merits and for its uniqueness. Dr Graham provides a translation of the poem with a very detailed literary and historical commentary. Most previous studies of the fu have concentrated on the Han period but Dr Graham offers an extended discussion in any language of the genre in the period of the six dynasties (222–589). A detailed historical account of the origins of the modern examination system in England from 1850 to 1900. At the beginning of the nineteenth century public examinations were almost unknown, yet by its end they were established as the most generally acceptable method of assessment and selection; with many they had become almost an article of the Victorian faith, though their objectivity and efficacy were already becoming matters of public controversy. The Oxford and Cambridge honours examinations provided a major source for Victorian ideas of open competition and public examinations. It was seen that this model could be applied to a whole range of educational and administrative purposes.
