Johann Severin Vater (1771–1826) was professor of theology and Oriental languages at Halle, but his wide-ranging linguistic interests included Slavonic and Native North American languages (the latter classified using data provided by Alexander von Humboldt). This book, first published in 1815, describes itself as a bibliography pertaining to 'all the languages of the world'. It is a monument to late eighteenth-century research into languages and linguistics, listing for each of its entries relevant texts with lexicons and grammars of the language in question. It was a valuable resource for nineteenth-century philologists, and its intended reach beyond the German-speaking scholarly world is indicated by the fact that the German text is accompanied by a Latin translation throughout. As well as including many Asian languages, the book recapitulates Vater's research on Native American languages, his knowledge of which was virtually unrivalled in Europe at that time.

A. E. Housman's five-volume critical edition of Marcus Manilius's Astronomicon has long been regarded as the definitive work on the subject. The task of bringing the edition together was one of considerable proportion which took Housman twenty-seven years to complete. It is now considered one of his most enduring and important contributions to scholarship. This volume contains the Latin text of the first book of Manilius, originally published in 1903, and then reissued in a second edition by the Cambridge University Press in 1937. It offers a short introductory note by Housman's friend and colleague at Trinity College, Cambridge, A. S. F. Gow, as well as a detailed introduction by Housman himself, tracing the manuscript history of the work and discussing particular challenges posed by the editorial process.

The editors extract from the Palatine Anthology such epigrams as can be assumed to have been written between the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC and the compilation by Meleager of Gadara, about 100 BC, of the anthology which he called The Garland. The first volume arranges the epigrams by their authors, adds from other sources further epigrams by these authors and prints with a full critical apparatus about 850 epigrams in all. The second volume contains a commentary on the text and Greek and English indexes. The assignment of many of the epigrams to the Hellenistic period depends on the assumption that they were included in Meleager's Garland, and the introduction therefore discusses the date, arrangement, and contents of that anthology. It also discusses the reliability of the ascriptions attached to the epigrams and the authorities for the text.

Originally published in 1959, this book contains the noted discussions of the second conference on the co-ordination of galactic research, held at Saltsjöbaden, near Stockholm, in June 1957, by the International Astronomical Union. 'The editorial work in preparing the present report has been shared by six of the participants of the conference' and 'in accordance with a decision taken at the Stockholm conference, an attempt has been made to present the material in the same way as the report of the Groningen conference of 1953'. Longhurst examines the proposition, central to fisheries science, that a fishery creates its own natural resource by the compensatory growth it induces in the fish, and that this is sustainable. His novel analysis of the reproductive ecology of bony fish of cooler seas offers some support for this, but a review of fisheries past and present confirms that sustainability is rarely achieved. The relatively open structure and strong variability of marine ecosystems is discussed in relation to the reliability of resources used by the industrial-level fishing that became globalised during the 20th century. This was associated with an extraordinary lack of regulation in most seas, and a widespread avoidance of regulation where it did exist. Sustained fisheries can only be expected where social conditions permit strict regulation and where politicians have no personal interest in outcomes despite current enthusiasm for ecosystem-based approaches or for transferable property rights.

Through channels both open and concealed, the Victorian economy continues to influence us powerfully. Much economic thinking today gains support from perceptions of how the nineteenth-century British economy worked and how well it satisfied wants. Contemporary oligopolistic industrial structure is contrasted with Victorian self-regulating competition; the gross inequalities of Victorian laissez-faire are compared with support for the needy provided by the modern welfare state; and some regard Victorian values as vital principles of social organisation which should be regained. By examining the behaviour of the British economy between 1865 and 1914, the present work casts light upon some of these views. It does so in a variety of ways. The interaction between ergodic theory and discrete groups has a long history and much work was done in this area by Hedlund, Hopf and Myrberg in the 1930s. There has been a great resurgence of interest in the field, due in large measure to the pioneering work of Dennis Sullivan. Tools have been developed and applied with outstanding success to many deep problems. The ergodic theory of discrete groups has become a substantial field of mathematical research in its own right, and it is the aim of this book to provide a rigorous introduction from first principles to some of the major aspects of the theory. The particular focus of the book is on the remarkable measure supported on the limit set of a discrete group that was first developed by S. J. Patterson for Fuchsian groups, and later extended and refined by Sullivan.

Engineers and scientists need powerful formalisms to make conceptual models of systems in order to analyse and design them. These models can be used to verify the behaviour of the systems, or as an executable specification of them. In this textbook, Professor van Hee concentrates on discrete dynamic systems, e.g. computer hardware, and information and logistical systems. Life in Nature, first published in 1862, is a series of papers by the nineteenth-century English surgeon and popular science writer James Hinton. About a third of the material, though revised and reworked for this book, had appeared previously under the title 'Physiological Riddles' in the Cornhill Magazine, in which Hinton explained biological phenomena for non-scientific readers. Hinton wrote this thirteen-chapter book to present a concise overview of the human body, informed by the latest scientific insights, that would be more easily intelligible for the general population than the scientific physiological data of his day. His intention was also to demonstrate the similarity between patterns occurring in the organic world and in the rest of nature. This book will be of value to historians of Victorian culture and science as an example of how authors and publishers responded to the growing middle-class interest in scientific discoveries.

William of Ockham (c. 1285–c. 1347) was the most eminent and influential theologian and philosopher of his day, a giant in the history of political thought. He was a Franciscan friar who came to believe that the Avignonese papacy of John XXII had set out to destroy the religious ideal on which the Franciscan order was based: the complete poverty of Christ and the apostles. This is the first complete text by Ockham to be published in English. By the time of Columbus, the people of Ecuador's tropical highlands had created small but remarkably complex and interlinked political societies. These small societies for many years proved able to fight off the overwhelming might of the Inca state. But around 1500 they fell to Inca invaders who, in turn, soon lost their dominion to Spanish warlords. Frank Salomon draws on large stores of sources to reconstruct the political and economic institutions of pre-Inca societies. Their structure before and during the Inca interlude reveals diversity in the Andean world.
