The premise of this book is that most activity in everyday life and work is based on tasks that are novel, infrequent in our experience, or variable with respect to the action to be taken. Such tasks require decisions to be made and actions taken in the face of ambiguous or incomplete information. Time pressure is frequently great and penalties for failure are severe. Examples include investing in markets, controlling industrial accidents, and detecting fraud. The environments in which such tasks occur defy a definition of optimal performance, yet the benefits of successful decision making are considerable. The authors refer to domains without criteria for optimal performance as competency-based and describe the able behaviour of individuals who work in them by the term competence. The chapters examine the propositions that metacognitive processes give structure to otherwise ill-structured tasks and are fundamental enablers of decision-making performance.

The third part translates these topological considerations into an appropriate algebraic context, relating tameness to homological properties and algebraic K- and L-theory.

Callimachus was one of the most important and influential writers in the ancient world. Written by Ludwig Riess (1861–1928), an eminent twentieth-century historian, this pioneering account of the medieval English electorate profoundly influenced the study of English constitutional history, as it questioned the fundamental assumptions of the scholarship that preceded it. First published in German in 1885, it critically evaluated the aims of the elected representatives, and re-assessed the general electoral regulations of the period. The Charters of Grenoble Cathedral are also commonly known as the Charters of St Hugues (1053–1132), who was consecrated bishop of the see in the late eleventh century and remained there until his death. In this 1869 work, the editor gives a thorough introduction to the history of the cathedral and to St Hugues' Charters. Marion discusses the controversial question of whether or not the second charter is authentic by examining the historical sources, and he demonstrates that out of the three charters, two can definitely be ascribed to St Hugues. Although the third charter was possibly begun in St Hugues' lifetime, it was probably completed by his successors. The first charter, probably written around 1130, describes the history of southern France and its inhabitants, and is followed by the much less accomplished second charter. The final charter shows signs of having been considerably re-edited.
