Integration of differential equations is a central problem in mathematics and several approaches have been developed by studying analytic, algebraic, and algorithmic aspects of the subject. One of these is Differential Galois Theory, developed by Kolchin and his school, and another originates from the Soliton Theory and Inverse Spectral Transform method, which was born in the works of Kruskal, Zabusky, Gardner, Green and Miura. William Carmichael McIntosh (1838–1931) was a Scottish physician and marine biologist and the first director of the Gatty Marine Laboratory, founded during 1896 in St Andrews. What is the nature of, and what is the relationship between, external objects and our visual perceptual experience of them? In this book, Frank Jackson defends the answers provided by the traditional Representative theory of perception. He argues, among other things that we are never immediately aware of external objects, that they are the causes of our perceptual experiences and that they have only the primary qualities. In the course of the argument, sense data and the distinction between mediate and immediate perception receive detailed defences and the author criticises attempts to reduce perceiving the believing and to show that the Representative theory makes the external world unknowable. Jackson recognises that his views are unfashionable but argues in detail that they are to be preferred to their currently favoured competitors. Originally published in 1970, this is a descriptive linguistic analysis of the grammar of modern Igbo. The analysis, based primarily on material gathered from two native speakers, one from Owerri Province and the other from Umuahia Province, is presented in the framework of the transformational model developed by Noam Chomsky. The grammar is a practical attempt to apply some of the advances in theoretical linguistics to a little-known language. There is no other grammar of Igbo in existence which presents a comprehensive descriptive analysis of the underlying and surface systems of the syntax and phonology of the language. The book will be useful for linguists as an example of the application of the transformational model to an exotic language. It will be of interest to specialists in African studies for the insights gained and the data presented from an important African language.

In 97 CE Julius Frontinus was appointed by the Emperor Nerva to the post of water commissioner for the city of Rome. In the De Aquaductu Urbis Romae he sets forth his duties, responsibilities and accomplishments during his first year in office.
