This book is a study of the relationship between full-time union officials and shop stewards across the whole of British industry (public and private, manufacturing and services) in 1986–91. It is the first major study of union officials for 20 years, and one of the most detailed studies of workplace collective bargaining and union organisation following the recession of the early 1980s. In the wake of recession, union decline, industrial restructuring, anti-union legislation, and changes in union policies (towards a new realism), Britain is said by some commentators to be entering a new era of industrial relations. Why do poor people often vote against their material interests? This puzzle has been famously studied within wealthy Western democracies, yet the fact that the poor voter paradox also routinely manifests within poor countries has remained unexplored. This book studies how this paradox emerged in India, the world's largest democracy. Tariq Thachil shows how arguments from studies of wealthy democracies (such as moral values voting) and the global south (such as patronage or ethnic appeals) cannot explain why poor voters in poor countries support parties that represent elite policy interests. Profits in the Long Run asks two questions: Are there persistent differences in profitability across firms? If so, what accounts for them? This book answers these questions using data for the 1000 largest US manufacturing firms in 1950 and 1972. It finds that there are persistent differences in profitability and market power across large US companies. Companies with persistently high profits are found to have high market shares and sell differentiated products. Mergers do not result in synergistic increases in profitability, but they do have an averaging effect. Companies with above normal profits have their profits lowered by mergers. Companies with initially below normal profits have them raised. In addition, the influence of other variables on long-run profitability, including risk, sales, diversification, growth and managerial control, is explored. The Abbey Church of Sainte-Foy of Conques, located in the south-west of France, was a stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. A masterpiece of Romanesque art, it was constructed from the second half of the eleventh century, and completed around 1120. Today, the thoroughly restored church is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The abbey's cartulary, containing 548 charters and other documents written between 801 and 1180, was rediscovered and edited by French archivist and palaeographer Gustave Desjardins (1834–1902), and published in 1879. These original documents not only provide information relating to the history of the abbey, but also yield valuable facts about the customs, the institutions, and the status of properties between the ninth and twelfth centuries. This volume, which includes an introduction putting the cartulary into its historical context, remains an essential reference for medievalists.
