The use of modelling techniques in the analysis and solution of problems in science and other fields of knowledge is widespread and has often come under intensive scrutiny. In Aristotle's view, Anaxagoras stood out from the other Presocratics as a sober man among the incoherent. This book explores the fragmentary evidence both for Anaxagoras' concept of mind - to which Aristotle was particularly referring - and for his subtle, complex and elusive theory of matter and change. It is concerned with two aspects of his writing in particular: its comparatively high ratio of dogmatic assertion to argument, and a pervasive ambiguity or indeterminacy in the presentation of Anaxagoras' philosophical theses. In 1977 several eminent mathematicians were invited to Durham to present papers at a short conference on homological and combinatorial techniques in group theory. The lectures, published here, aimed at presenting in a unified way new developments in the area. Group theory is approached from a geometrical viewpoint and much of the material has not previously been published. The various ways in which topological ideas can be used in group theory are also brought together. The basis of this graduate-level textbook is a careful survey of a wide range of problems affecting the solution of linear partial differential equations. The book begins with a fairly elementary introduction to the theory of Fourier series of continuous functions and goes on to describe the fundamental theory of linear partial differential equations of elliptic and hyperbolic types, equations of evolution, semi-linear hyperbolic equations and selected topics on Green's functions and spectra of some special operators. The book is intended for use by pure mathematicians in functional analysis. The selection of material is interesting and differs from existing literature in European languages. This 1976 text is a pioneering study in the applications to archaeology of modern statistical and quantitative techniques. The authors show how these techniques, when sensitively employed, can dramatically extend and refine the information presented in distribution maps and other analyses of spatial relationships. Techniques of interpretation 'by inspection' can now be made more powerful and rigorous; at the same time interest has turned from the examination of such sites and artefacts as 'things' to the spatial relationships between such things, their relationships to one another and to landscape features, soils and other resources. Positions of authority in any society are limited in number, and therefore rules of selection must operate in their recruitment. There must also be limitations upon the range of authority exercised. These problems are particularly acute in the case of high office, where the questions of recruitment and succession are of central importance. This 1979 volume provides a general and theoretical analysis of succession in different traditional African societies. This book, first published in 1979, challenges the tendency of historians to neglect the relationship between conditions in the literate urban centers and those in the hinterlands. As he discusses the intersection of art and life among the Bedouins, Meeker is able to show how the place of pastoral nomadism in Near-Eastern history has a bearing on many of the problems that have concerned Orientalists.

Sheaf theory provides a means of discussing many different kinds of geometric objects in respect of the connection between their local and global properties. It finds its main applications in topology and modern algebraic geometry where it has been used as a tool for solving, with great success, several long-standing problems. This text is based on a lecture course for graduate pure mathematicians which builds up enough of the foundations of sheaf theory to give a broad definition of manifold, covering as special cases the algebraic geometer's schemes as well as the topological, differentiable and analytic kinds, and to define sheaf cohomology for application to such objects. The importance in social relationships of the exchange of information by non-verbal gestures and expressions, though long appreciated by artists and writers, has only recently become the subject of serious scientific study. Simulating a continuous process on a (computer) model provides a means of understanding how a system will behave when it is subject to particular constraints. Computers are of particular use for this purpose as the system is one which involves differential equations, eg. the behaviour of the vehicle suspension systems and chemical reactions. The book describes how analogue, digital and hybrid computers are used in simulating continuous systems. Their use is illustrated in the text by a number of simple problems and most chapters also contain examples of varying complexity selected from a range of scientific and engineering disciplines. A short appendix describes the functioning of analogue and hybrid units; for the rest of the book a knowledge of electric circuit theory is not required.

In the seventies the British political system was in deep and growing crisis. The leading political parties appeared unable to offer effective solutions to the major problems which confronted the electorate and the electorate was consequently increasingly alienated from politicians who promised so much and delivered so little. The gap between promise and performance had been a persistent feature of Labour Party politics in particular and with the revival of radicalism within the Labour Party during the 1970s it was the opportune time to re-examine the record of the party and its potential. Jonathan Bennett here examines the second half of the Critique of Pure Reason, the Dialectic, where Kant is concerned with problems about substance, the nature of the self, the cosmos, freedom and the existence of God. As in his earlier book, Professor Bennett offers not passive exegesis but critical assessment; he approaches Kant from the standpoint of contemporary analytical philosophy, identifying those arguments and issues of most continuing interest, and engaging with Kant in discussion of them. His purpose throughout is 'not history with a special subject-matter, but philosophy with a special technique'.

Two essays on utilitarianism, written from opposite points of view, by J. J. C. Smart and Bernard Williams. In the first part of the book Professor Smart advocates a modern and sophisticated version of classical utilitarianism; he tries to formulate a consistent and persuasive elaboration of the doctrine that the rightness and wrongness of actions is determined solely by their consequences, and in particular their consequences for the sum total of human happiness. In Part II Bernard Williams offers a sustained and vigorous critique of utilitarian assumptions, arguments and ideals. He finds inadequate the theory of action implied by utilitarianism, and he argues that utilitarianism fails to engage at a serious level with the real problems of moral and political philosophy, and fails to make sense of notions such as integrity, or even human happiness itself. This book should be of interest to welfare economists, political scientists and decision-theorists.

First published in 1973, Dr Clemmow's Introduction to Electromagnetic Theory provides a crisp and selective account of the subject. It concentrates on field theory (with the early development of Maxwell's equations) and omits extended descriptions of experimental phenomena and technical applications, though without losing sight of the practical nature of the subject. Rationalized mks units are used and an awareness of orders of magnitude is fostered. Fields in media are discussed from both the macroscopic and microscopic points of view. As befits a mainly theoretical treatment, a knowledge of vector algebra and vector calculus is assumed, the standard results required being summarized in an appendix. Other comparatively advanced mathematical techniques, such as tensors anf those involving Legendre or Bessel functions, are avoided. Problems for solution, some 180 in all, are given at the end of each chapter.
