In recent years what has come to be called the 'New Mechanism' has emerged as a framework for thinking about the philosophical assumptions underlying many areas of science, especially in sciences such as biology, neuroscience, and psychology. It develops a new position, Methodological Mechanism, according to which mechanisms are to be viewed as causal pathways that are theoretically described and are underpinned by networks of difference-making relations. Those books typically dealt with algebraic structures such as groups, rings and fields: still very important concepts! The essays analyze Newton's relation to his contemporaries, especially Barrow, Descartes, Leibniz and Locke and discuss the ways in which a broad range of figures, including Hume, Maclaurin, Maupertuis and Kant, reacted to his thought. In 2002, an introductory workshop was held at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley to survey some of the many directions of the commutative algebra field. Six principal speakers each gave three lectures, accompanied by a help session, describing the interaction of commutative algebra with other areas of mathematics for a broad audience of graduate students and researchers. This book is based on those lectures, together with papers from contributing researchers. This is the first book to contain a rigorous construction and uniqueness proof for the largest and most famous sporadic simple group, the Monster. The author provides a systematic exposition of the theory of the Monster group, which remains largely unpublished despite great interest from both mathematicians and physicists due to its intrinsic connection with various areas in mathematics, including reflection groups, modular forms and conformal field theory. Through construction via the Monster amalgam – one of the most promising in the modern theory of finite groups – the author observes some important properties of the action of the Monster on its minimal module, which are axiomatized under the name of Majorana involutions. Development of the theory of the groups generated by Majorana involutions leads the author to the conjecture that Monster is the largest group generated by the Majorana involutions.
