The best alternative to chemical control is often seen as being biological control - the introduction of natural enemies in areas where foreign pests become abundant. However, biological control alone is not always sufficient to maintain pest populations under a tolerable level; and it is necessary to learn how to make it compatible with other methods of control, and in particular with chemicals, in integrated control programs. Data on these important aspects was collected and elaborated over a period of seven to eight years and synthesized in this volume, which was originally published in 1976. The data relates to five groups of species recognized as main agricultural pests over vast areas of developing countries. It shows how complex the interrelationships between microorganisms are how much research effort has to be invested in such disciplines as systematics, physiology, ethnology and ecology for their understanding.

First published in 1953, these Hulsean Lectures inquire 'what has been, and what should be, the attitude of the Church and of individual Christians towards religions other than their own' and review the policy and methods of Christian missions to non-Christians. Dr Dewick has adopted a definition of 'religion' sufficiently wide to cover the challenging political-philosophical systems - such as Communism, Fascism and Nationalism - which, though professedly non-religious or even anti-religious, display many of the characteristics of religion; and he shows clearly what principles should underlie the Christian attitude to such pseudo-religions. R. S. Silver began to criticise convention teaching ideas when, as an employer of graduate engineers, he saw how unimaginative their training sometimes made them. In industry, thermodynamic problems are not presented in pure 'textbook' style: they arise casually, in real, complex situations, and newly graduated engineers take some time to outgrow the resulting confusion. This 1959 bibliography lists and describes everything that came from the press of John Baskerville of Birmingham, who was appointed Printer to the University of Cambridge in 1758. After an introduction in which Dr Gaskell describes the methods that he has adopted and the conclusions that he has drawn from the investigation, there are two main parts: Specimens, Proposals and other Ephemera, and Books. Each entry contains a quasi-facsimile transcription of the title page, and gives details of formula contents amongst several other things. This, which was the first full bibliography of Baskerville's work, will be an essential tool for Baskerville collectors and for historians of printing and typography as well as for bibliographers. There are twelve collotype plates, most of which illustrate unique copies of Baskerville's ephemera; and there is in addition a full-size facsimile of Baskerville's last type specimen.

This book was first published in 1970. It addresses the increasing use of digital computers for equilibrium calculations in high temperature, high pressure processes, in rocketry and in explosives technology. It surveys the numerical techniques developed over the fifteen to twenty years preceding its publication. The authors derive the equations describing equilibria in different types of system and outline the effect of variation of the parameters of the system on the equilibrium composition. They discuss critically the available methods of solution of the chemical equilibrium problem, both in the minimization and non-linear equations form, and indicate the factors that should be taken into account in selecting the optimum method of solution for a particular problem and computer. A central figure in Victorian science, William Whewell (1794–1866) held professorships in Mineralogy and Moral Philosophy at Trinity College, Cambridge, before becoming Master of the college in 1841. Originally published in 1973, this is a selection of the educational writings of H. E. Armstrong, edited with a full introduction by W. H. Brock. Henry Armstrong (1848–1937) was a controversial and energetic publicist for reforms in science teaching and curricula. He was concerned to make teaching at all levels less didactic and authoritarian, more practical and experimental; where possible a student should be prompted by his own curiosity, and should learn things first hand. He called his approach 'heuristic' - meaning learning through discovery - and sought to establish it through public platforms like the British Association, schools and through his own training of teachers. Wolfram's Parzival is one of the great medieval romances, but the complexities and obscurities of source, language and the Grail symbol have led to a virtual neglect by scholars of the problems of structure and characterisation. Polymers exhibit a range of physical characteristics, from rubber-like elasticity to the glassy state. These particular properties are controlled at the molecular level by the mobility of the structural constituents. The Victorian polymath William Stanley Jevons (1835–82) is generally and rightly venerated as one of the great innovators of economic theory and method in what came to be known as the 'marginalist revolution'.
